Victorian Lady - Colours

Description

About
My first full colour.

I have attempted some simple block shading rather than flat colour done by layering the original base colour to keep the tones right.

I chose a deep purple for her outfit and umbrella and mid purple for the trims as purple was considered to be quite a regal colour, with her neat hair and because she is wearing gloves I considered the character to be one with influence in Victorian society.

I know the background has streaked, I had a few issues with that pen. I'm a little sad that it did though as the background was the last thing I did. - Maybe it was also because I had nearly completed it I maybe rushed a little too.

For color-me-club Victorian theme December colouring contest.

As a proof of concept, I think you did a pretty good job with this piece. The colours are saturated and there is a nice contrast to make the central figure pop up from the page. The decorative flowers in the corner fulfilled their job without being over-powering. The repeated motif between the red flowers/green leaves on the hat and in the corner is also a good touch. And it's these nice touches that really bring the whole picture together.

There is, of course, room for improvement. Looking at this piece at the present moment, we do notice streaking in the background. It's difficult to colour a large area without some streaking, really. But it is possible to use the almost-inevitable streaking into a marbling effect to add more depth to the background in order to make the character stand out even more. It's food for thought.

The next thing to work on is adding shadows and highlights. And that is perhaps the most difficult part in colouring. There are a good number of marker-based tutorials on dA, which would be good places to start. Using a marker-friendly paper (at a slightly higher weight) may also help with shading and reduction of streaking in the future.

I hope this helps.
It's a solid start nonetheless.
