Improvement Meme by SavannaEGoth Improvement Meme by SavannaEGoth
AHHHHH I've been wanting to do this meme forEVER.  Too bad I haven't drawn enough shit for 2016, though . . . I had to spoil another WIP image from the fantroll video.  >A>
Soooo I guess I'll just start off with explaining year 2011, yeah?
Oh!  And I'll be updating this everywhere or when I get better art to feature in the stupid boxes for the current year, Jesus Christ.

2011
Almost everything I was uploading to DA at the time was traditional.  I had a lot of how to draw books and used the images in there as practice.  That was when I first learned how to use basic shapes to base my art around.  It made drawing so much easier when I didn't try to draw the fucking outline of a piece first, let me tell you.  *Rolls eyes*  I started drawing mostly my Warriors OCs and my, at the time, fursona, er- dragonsona?  Basically it was just Bloody.  Bloody originated as a Warrior OC, my first OC ever, and I decided I would make a dragon based off of her.  That dragon became my dragonsona and I would draw myself with her wings and tail all of the time.  After awhile I got more into using MSPaint again for some more serious artwork rather than stupid doodles and lazy Warriors art.  VivzMind was my inspiration and reason for joining DA in the first place, so when I first tried to practice my humans I tried to imitate her style . . . because I was creepy and unoriginal.  I also made her some fanart and tried my hand at animating.  As it turned out I was really, really good at lip-syncing and making things look smooth when I animated them.  That was good because my art style was still pretty poor at the time, and I was really trying hard to develop it.  My anatomy sucked ass back then . . . but for some reason I was proud of it and called myself an artist.  I also got into adopting some characters on DA, and my mother's boyfriend at the time introduced me to GIMP.  On GIMP I had a whole plethora of drawing tools at my disposal and I fell in love with the program.

2012
I disappeared after being super active my first year on the site.  I was mostly playing video games and reading books during this time, almost completely forgetting about my DA altogether.  It wasn't until I started drawing Pokemon and Miscrits creatures along with somewhat realistic pictures of my stuffed animals that I decided to return to DA the following year.

2013
And what a triumphant return it was.  This was the year that I gained most of my watchers and uploaded the most art.  I made a ton of new friends from different fandoms and was literally working on art everyday while also planning out character stories and biographies.  I had started reading Homestuck after seeing some fan videos on YouTube and getting to know my future moirail Bailey better in our English class.  I made a few fan sessions and tons--LITERALLY FUCKING TONS--of base edits and character sprites.  People responded really well to that so I continued making them and started taking free sprite commission requests.  I made some more adoptables that year and even joined my first roleplay group, Poke-Noir.  I made even more friends through that group and pretty much spent most of my time dividing up roleplays between Homestuck and Poke-Noir--the roleplays I had with HappyFridge , BedCrows , LittlePidgie were the ones that influenced me the most.  I also became open about the fact that I was an MLP fan, something that I felt very insecure about at the time, and started designing more 'sona characters.  I made quite a few YouTube videos during this year featuring my and some friends' characters, and tried my hand at more unique body styles for humanoid characters.  Turned out it was pretty easy, and I was closer to developing my own style.  This was also the year I uploaded my most famous deviations--my Homestuck reader inserts which still get tons of views, comments, and favorites to this day.

2014
I started out the year pretty laidback and opened up an Ask! thing for my trollsona, Savana.  I also began to experiment with combining traditional and digital art since I was still super slow at drawing on the computer using only a goddamned mouse.  I found that I could simply draw my pieces traditionally and then color over them in GIMP with the color mixers.  I started to practice shading and lighting more in more pieces, and put more detail overall into my work.  I was still mainly inspired by Homestuck and the roleplays I had as I joined some more groups.  I was having a lot of fun, but my art haul was slowing down a bit.  These pieces took longer than simple sprites and base edits.  That, and my roleplay style was developing as well.  I was learning more about grammar techniques and was kicking old incorrect habits through all of the writing.  I even experimented with realism and cross-hatching in school during my off time.  I was able to whip up pretty impressive drawings in between classes during one school day (like the portrait of Violetta above).

2015
It was in 2015 that I became active in the Otherworlde group.  I finally got to dust off my oldest OC, Bloody, and was super excited to introduce a new cast of characters I would use in and out of group roleplays.  I adopted more and more characters as well, and started making closed species.  My pixel art had vastly improved, and I was even giving hair fly-away strands for effect.  Eyes were becoming more and more fun to draw so I started changing up my OCs' eyes to make them look more expressive and individualistic.  This was also the first year I got to use a tablet (Josh had gotten it for Christmas but it eventually became mine when we started living together).  I found that I could make beautiful art on the computer, too.  That first pic in the line up was my first digital piece.  I spent a whole day on it for a French project the next day.  However, I was depressingly slow with the tablet so I still drew a lot of traditional art and would practice tracing that to make my lines more confident.  I was becoming more frustrated with that technique as well as time went on, so I instead went back to MSPaint and began lining more of my work there before I would edit it in GIMP or Josh's Manga Studio he also got for Christmas.  My characters were beginning to look more three-dimensional and I was creating more of them with no signs of slowing.  My work continued to improve in quality and attention to detail.  Much of this year, unlike the others, was spent developing my creative writing.  I would write over 3000 words every month while giving my characters more personality and insight on their histories and futures.

2016

Through a series of stressful events I started to withdraw from DA again.  I went on a few short hiatuses the year prior, but this year I vanished for months.  I concerned my friends and watchers as I left even Facebook and Skype and got a new phone number.  I didn't intentionally push everyone away--things were just getting to be too much.  I had moved back in to my parents' house after being kicked out by them the year prior (I lived with Josh's family but his mom became sick so I had to leave them).  I ended up leaving Otherworlde due to personal reasons and typical group drama and sort of . . . ceased to exist.  Instead I focused on school and work, the two main uses of my time nowadays.  I was so stressed out and unhappy from my life back at home and from everything in my new adult career that I fell into a large depressive funk.  Nothing excited me anymore.  I stopped smiling and talking to a lot of people, even Josh noted that I was very unhappy.  We'd been workng to move out together, but it seemed so impossible all of a sudden, so unrealistic.  But he kept me going, kept building me up and reassuring me, putting me back together when my mother's husband tore me apart.  I started doodling again and eventually my school workload lessened, though did not become easier in content.  This went on for awhile before Josh and I had finally earned enough money (and then some) to move out on our own.  We got a really nice apartment in a good neighborhood close to work and not too far from his school and my bus stops to the college.  My work hours became more consistent and eventually I finished my first two semesters of college, moving on to the summer semester.  I started peeking back in on my DeviantArt and uploaded some random pieces here and there.  I reached back out to my friends and became more motivated to work on things again.  I found that after all that time my anatomy skills had actually improved a lot since I left off and so I practiced more perspective.  I also started working with Josh on a manga series he's been planning for awhile.  We've been designing characters, outfits, weapons, races, enemies, the world, and relationships while I helped him design and map a story.  I haven't uploaded anything related to his manga, however.  I think we're going to wait until we get more done before we start spoiling things.  Josh and I are even working on a game idea he had in RPG-Maker which we both got for a steal on Steam!  (In case you guys haven't noticed, Josh is obviously the main driving factor in my life right now--my number one inspiration!  He's helped me so mucha nd I couldn't ask for anyone more loving or awesome than him.  QuQc)  Other than that, I started storyboarding again and am compiling lists of my OCs and art I still want to make.  I'm close to becoming more active, I feel.  I also quit my fast food job and am hoping to start working in retail at the mall within the week.  Fingers crossed that things continue to improve!  Maybe I'll even draw something more worthy of a spot on this meme.
