I found Tell Me When while browsing through a collection of old books for sale. I had already chosen a few books and was on my way out when the book caught my eye at the last moment.
I honestly think that fate pulled me toward this book because it is genuinely one of my favourite books ever. Everything about it makes me so happy, from the representation to the characters to the story itself.
Tell Me When is a post-apocalyptic work of fiction written in a really unique way-- the main character is nameless and is referred to with gender-neutral pronouns. It’s all written in first-person, which works perfectly in fully immersing the reader into the story.
The story follows the main character and describes the situation around them: a whole bunch of teenagers wake up on an island and are made aware of the fact that they have each been hand-picked to trial a new lifestyle, free of cost. At first, there is seamless contact

Yaya was glad for the peace of the library. She had always loved reading and the weightlessness that came with it. She was glad the library had… opened? Been discovered? Well, she wasn’t sure, but she was glad it was here now. Looking up from the book she had in her hand, she observed the area around her.
Warm light filtered in from high windows that peeked out from behind tall bookshelves. Years old-- nay, decades-old books lay crooked within their arms, cobwebs dusting their covers. She could see the fall of the sun outside and the progress of the moon into its rightful place in the sky.
Looking around her, Yaya smiled. It wasn’t just the setting that gave her peace of mind.
All around her, people sat, reading. Many listened to music, and she could hear a far-off guitar strumming dreamily. Someone was nice enough to bring it along, yet was willing to play it far enough away that the majority of people wouldn’t be interrupted. Some chattered quietly with others, while some sat

March winds N April showers - CCCAT ALPHA: FISHING
It was noon, and the sun above was beating fiercely down onto the two CCCats who were tucked into the airboat.
Kiki was sitting in the back, steering, bucket hat tucked firmly onto her head. Strands of blue hair flapped behind her ears, the rest of her hair flying free as she grinned into the wind.
In front of her slouched Avery, and he slapped at flies as they whizzed past, often looking over his shoulder to show her that he didn’t want to be there. She would just grin at him, and he would groan and slouch further, his long speckled tail flopping over his back.
When the blue CCCat had offered to take him fishing, he had turned his nose up at her and kept staring blankly at the walls, sipping dejectedly on the dregs of a juice box. He thought that that would’ve been enough to put her off, but Sabine quickly hopped on his case and kicked him out, threatening him with permanent homelessness if he didn’t come back with a fish big enough for them to all eat together. When he had whined

When her phone first pinged with a notification, Kiki forced herself to ignore it. She didn’t like looking at her phone while eating and even enforced it as a table rule, but with Skizzie in the room, she knew that if she even touched the small machine, she’d be on her like a lion. So she continued to eat her noodles, one hand around the chopsticks and the other holding her bowl, the very embodiment of calm.
Just as she raised the chopsticks to her mouth, her phone pinged again.
She could feel Skizzie slowly slide her eye into cyclops mode and stare at her.
“...Well? Aren’t you gonna pick that up?” Kiki sighed and put her chopsticks down, sliding her bowl away. She popped her eye out of her mouth and passed it from hand to hand, a nervous habit she still hadn’t
