Summer Card Project
No matter the reason, any stay in a hospital could use a little sunshine. And what better way to brighten a hospital stay than with art from the heart?
After nine successful years of DeviantArt's #HolidayCardProject, we've decided to bring the project to the summer months, for the first ever #SummerCardProject!
The idea behind this project is simple: create an inspirational card to brighten the day of someone staying in a hospital. If you're looking for even more incentive, every deviant who sends in a card will be given a free one-month Core Membership to DeviantArt.
Last December, the project received over 4,500 cards sent in from 2,000 deviants from 60 different countries/political regions. Cards are then divvied up and distributed by DeviantArt members to patients in local Los An

Introducing Improved Comments
With over 1.5 million comments posted per day, deviantART's commenting system provides the backbone for fostering relationships across the globe. Whether mentoring one another, providing artistic support, or checking in with a friend, commenting is one of the site's most used and loved features.
To highlight this vital aspect of community interaction and provide more control around conversations, we’re proud to release the first in a series of improvements to comments.
The Featured comments option allows deviants to showcase the most meaningful or interesting feedback they’ve received — helping those comments stand out from the rest. When someone leaves a feature-worthy reply on one of your deviations, you can now highlight that comment from the pencil menu.
Featured comments on deviations are highlighted and denoted with a special label.

Create and Sell Motion Books on deviantART
Motion Books push the boundaries of storytelling to the extreme, turning the act and art of reading into something that extends well beyond the printed page. Madefire's powerful and adaptable Motion Book Tool is now in your hands, allowing you to create expressive stories where audio and visual artistry collide.
The Motion Book is an adventurous, energy-packed medium that empowers creators to reach for worlds unseen. When you submit your Motion Books to deviantART and share them with the world, they'll be showcased alongside some of the comic industry's greatest creators and publishers, right alongside characters like Batman, Optimus Prime, Rainbow Dash, and Hellboy!
DeviantArt Is Switching To HTTPS
Starting today, DeviantArt is completely switching over to HTTPS. You’ll notice that the URL in your browser bar will soon begin with “https” rather than “http.” This means our pages will be delivered over a secure, encrypted channel.
This change will be rolling out to all deviants over the coming days.
While DeviantArt had implemented HTTPS on sensitive pages -- such as our login and shopping cart pages — many years ago, it’s overdue that we extend HTTPS to the rest of the site.

Some Notes for Developers of Journal Skins and Profile Customizations
If you develop your own Journal Skins, or any sort of profile customizations or browser extensions, please note that only HTTPS images will be served on DeviantArt. If you’ve uploaded your Journal Skins to DeviantArt’s Journal Skins category, you won’t need to make any changes. If
What's Next for Eclipse: Feedback
Late last year, we released the beta version of DeviantArt Eclipse – a redesign that puts more emphasis on artists and their art. It’s one of our biggest, most ambitious updates to date, which is why we’ve chosen to open it to Beta Testers as early as we did. Not only do we need Beta Testers’ help locating and squashing those pesky bugs, we want to gain deviants’ feedback, thoughts, and opinions on the current Eclipse experience and what we should include in the future. We’re very proud and excited with the level of collaboration we’ve been able to achieve with the DeviantArt community, and we hope to continue this as we further develop Eclipse. The Beta version of Eclipse has brought many changes (see them here), with even more in store, including ways to customize and personalize Profiles! We Hear You!Since the Beta launch of Eclipse late last year, we’ve received a lot of feedback regarding just that: Feedback. You might have called it a few other names in the past: Feedback, Message Center, Notifications, etc. Let’s establish what Feedback is: it’s comments and replies made on your art, any mentions of you or your art, and correspondence with other deviants and groups. We processed and analyzed your thoughts and opinions on Feedback, and how cumbersome it had become to interact with friends on Eclipse. With that, we’re excited to show you some major updates in the works.Changes We’re Making Based on Your FeedbackNew NavigationYou can now easily access Feedback by clicking on the bell icon next to your avatar, with all the different areas visible for you to filter through. Just a simple click and you can filter to view only your comments or only your mentions.One-Click RemoveA popular request from several Beta Testers! With one, easy click of a mouse you can tidy up Feedback to your exact liking. These upcoming updates will be announced in @danlev's weekly change logs as soon as they are live. Update Regarding Changes to Image Processing
Hello everyone! In November, a change was made as part of a larger ongoing revamp in how image hosting and processing is handled here on DeviantArt. However, as part of the process, some complications arose that have taken longer to address than previously hoped, and as such we wanted to provide some transparency on the matter.
First and foremost, thank you for your bug reports and comments with regard to these recent changes! The feedback that we've received has helped us nail down some of the primary issues that have needed attention. To clarify also, as it came up in a number of comments: the image processing changes are unrelated to DeviantArt Eclipse. As the timing of both overlapped, we fully understand that it might have seemed that the issues created by the image processing changes were connected to Eclipse, but we do want to reassure you that they are separate projects.
While some specific fixes are still in the works at this particular moment in time, her

Find me again as Angelo
tldr; I'm spyed but I'm angelo now.
Not as big a transition as Caitlyn Jenner, but boy do we both feel better about life.
I've grown past the stage where I need a pseudonym; I really want to be myself. I'm sure you understand.
I created my online name and persona a long time ago. So long ago, that I no longer identify with it completely. I was Spyed for five years before DeviantArt came to exist, 15 years ago, so you can only imagine how much I've changed in 19 years.
I have been building communities for that long. Imagine that.
Video game boards, ANSI/ASCII boards, WAREZ boards, programming boards, MP3 boards and ultimately the ultimate Art board. Being Spyed was awesome. I will still be spyed here, I'll update with official things from time to time. But if you want to see my more regular activity you'll find it on angelo
It just feels right to do this. I've finally had a chance to really admit that to myself and it feels great.
I've been facing thi
What's going on with DeviantArt?
There's a lot of changes going on with DeviantArt, and we recognize that this is irritating. We don't want it to be irritating, but unfortunately we don't have a choice.
DeviantArt must transform. The live product is failing to interest as many new members as it used to. We've identified many of the reasons for this, and we're making transformative changes to help new users adopt DeviantArt. We especially want new users to come in and Watch Deviants, and begin conversing about Art. Ultimately we want new Deviants to post Deviations and contribute to the community. DeviantArt is meant as the place to support people in the world as they become more creative in their lives. As a community, we represent the journey of being a more creative person.
The current state of DeviantArt isn't adequately communicating our value to new members. And the products they are using confuse them. We've interviewed new members on the phone, in surveys, via email. We know what the issues are.
To fix th
Why move Watch out of Notifications?
In my last journal, What's going on with DeviantArt, there was a lot of great conversation back and forth and over 400 comments. I read every single one, and my responses started to become repetitive so I stopped.
One of my favorite questions was, "Why do you even want to move Watch out of Notifications? I don't understand why this is so important." So I wanted to address that head on:
Answer: Moar Power. Easier to Use.
The real project here is that we're switching to a Watch that is powered by the same/similar systems Browse is powered by, making it possible to see your Watch as Newest, Undiscovered, Popular, filter by Category, search by keyword, filter by Shop items, Commission items, etc. MUCH MOAR POWERFUL.
Here's the disconnect:
1. The experience of Browse needs improvement, too.
Browse needs functionality that reinforces why we're all here; To engage
Welcoming New Deviants
Starting today, we're launching an ongoing initiative aimed at increasing community spirit by identifying deviants who are good at reaching out to others, and matching them with new deviants who might benefit from a kindred guide.
Joining a new community can sometimes feel daunting -- like you’re on the outside looking in. But we’re working on ways to make it easier for new deviants to meet others and get involved with the things that matter most to them.
If you're a deviant who often interacts with new deviants, you may receive a notification every so often. Currently, there isn't a way to opt-in to getting these notification, but you can increase your chances of receiving them by interacting with new deviants. The "New Deviants" section of the today page is a great place to start.
How It Works
We’ve selected a small group of deviants who’ve pro
Out of Office: Edit
I'm back! It was a super long week, and looks like you guys didn't hold any punches while I was away. I have my work cut out for me. I'd still appreciate your patience while I play catch up from my time away. Went through a pretty drastic change in my personal life and it's hitting me a bit hard but I should be able to bounce back with the support you lovely folks provide. <3
So… remember those big personal changes? Well they're starting! There is a long way to go before things are completely settled but the first few major steps are underway. In that regard I will be away from the Help Desk for a week. July 11th - 15th.
While I'm away the good folks from the CEA team will be looking in on General Help and Bugs for me to manage any fires that may break out. If you notice things are taking a little longer than normal please bear with us.
I really appreciate your patience during this time.
Top Community Feature Requests and Our Responses
In May, we introduced the DeviantArt Timeline as a method of communicating with deviants and providing transparency about what’s planned for our collective future. During the site simplification process that followed, we received a number of comments from deviants asking why we were working on the features presented on the Timeline instead of other things. Many of the features brought up in these comments are ones that have been requested for years. We want to be more transparent about these suggested features, why some of them haven’t happened yet, and why some of them may never happen.
These requests are from past Site Updates, the Suggestions Forum, surveys, and individual requests we’ve received.
Suicide and Self-harm Prevention
Are you going through a difficult time?
If you or someone you know is experiencing thoughts of suicide or self-harm and are in immediate danger, seek help as soon as possible by calling a local emergency telephone number, a suicide prevention hotline, or by going to the nearest emergency room. At DeviantArt, we care deeply about our community – aiming to provide all our members with a safe and fun environment to create and grow. However, we do not have trained medical professionals who can respond directly to life-threatening emergencies. Please use the following resources if you are concerned about the safety of a DeviantArt member – including yourself.

Suicide, self-harm, and crisis prevention hotlines provide help to those in need – often acting as the first point of contact for individuals who are seeking help, support, and
Cleaning-up Site Naming
As mentioned in last week’s Beginnings of Site Simplification journal and the new DeviantArt Timeline, we’ve spent a lot of time thinking about how to make DeviantArt a simplified and unified experience — ultimately leading to increased participation from new and longtime deviants, adding more favourites, comments, and deviousness to the site as a whole.
Because DeviantArt has been around for nearly 15 years, we recognize that the site has accumulated a number of terms, words, and names for our various features and functions — some of which have multiple or similar meanings, and many of which increase confusion around how the site works.
We understand that DeviantArt is a community of artists from around the world who will use all kinds of creative expressions to des
Beginnings of Site Simplification
Beginnings of Site Simplification
It’s no secret that DeviantArt is a complicated site. Have you ever invited a friend to DeviantArt, only to have them ask a bunch of questions about how to get started? Or have you ever spoken with a fellow deviant about a feature you use daily, only to learn they didn't know that feature existed? It’s our aim to make a new deviant's first experience as inspiring and welcoming as those who have made this community their home. We’ve spent a lot of time thinking about how to make Devia
