Portrait Painting in Oils
Traditional Art
Hello there, it's a great pleasure to share with you my thoughts and approach to portrait painting. Either you are a begginner, an intermediate or more advanced, I hope you find this article useful and inspiring to some degree. Besides, portraits seldom give us a break, right? Disbelief
Defining Alla Prima
In this tutorial we will explore the alla prima approach. So, what is "alla prima"? Alla prima is an Italian term meaning at first attempt. In other words it's a direct, wet on wet painting method, using one layer of paint. If the scale allows it then the painting is done before the paint starts to dry. If it's a large painting then you're forced to paint it in parts in the same manner.
Now, this is one way to do it but it doesn't mean it's the only way or the best way to go with it.
But no matter our approach we have to be disciplined. So let's try some of that!

Introduction to Gouache
Traditional Art

Definition of the Medium
Gouache is similar to watercolor and acrylic. But it has unique characteristics that differentiate it from both of them.
Like watercolor, it's water soluble and its binder is gum arabic (M. Graham & Co use honey ιn their gouache). The pigment ratio however is much higher compared to watercolor. It's also opaque (containing chalk). However, it can be thinned down to washes and worked just like watercolor. In that form it's less translucent than watercolors but you'll have a hard time to tell the difference. Most importantly it can build up opaque layers.
When it dries - like acrylic - the lights tend to be a bit darker and the darks a bit lighter. It dries fast and flat. Although - unlike acrylic - the opaque layers of gouache can be reactivated with water. Despite the matte look, gouache has a special vibrancy in opaque form due to the high pigment load.
If you work in watercolor, y

My former collegues of Abbey Games did an AMA (Ask Me Anything) on reddit earlier! If you're interested in a little behind the scenes of a Dutch game studio, you can read it here! Most of it is in Dutch, but not all of it! ;)
Headangle Practise
More sizzle from my D&D character, Martha Shevarra the human paladin! I really like drawing her and thinking what she would look like, and then I suddenly thought of this thing betsyillustration has done a while back, so I felt like giving it a shot! It was quite the challenge, the front view and up angle took quite a while to get right. I almost always draw people from a slight angle, never straight front view XD

My friend Ra-ooo is organizing a Zoid-themed Original Character Tournament! If you're into robot / mecha animals in space (like Voltron), this might be something for you! :la:
My internship at Abbey Games is over, what a blast it has been! I worked on so many different things: character animations, buildings, trees and shrubs, marketing illustrations, icons and even UI! Still, it'll take a while before I can show my glorious contribution, the soonest things will be revealed is in the first half of 2019. A little patience, my friends! :)

I'm sad it's over, but I guess it's time to move on. I'll be enjoying my summer holidays now and in September I'll start working on my graduation project. Whatever my graduation project will be: I have no ideas yet. I'll just see what happens. ;p

And hopefully, now I have a lot of free time again, I get back on track with drawing and painting again!

I'm shy. That means I don't say (read: comment) much when I don't have something to say, and I won't spam your inbox with lots of journals. Yes, I'm always very busy with school and stuff, so there won't be any art floods either. You can safely watch me, you won't drown in my art! :aww:

CRITIQUE ME! No, I mean it. I'm here to inprove, so please say it when you think I should change something in my works. Don't be as shy as I am! :ohnoes: Tell me if you like it and tell me if you hate it. That's the only way we can learn something from it. :)
