As I write this, the constant state of shock I've been in all day still hasn't subsided even a tiny bit.

Let me tell you all a little story.

When I first heard about The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, to be quite honest my expectations hadn't been too high. I still clung onto my favourite titles, Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. This idea that a game predated those didn't sit well.

During time in Germany last year, I was able to attend the GamesCom in Cologne and test play Skyward Sword for a total of ten minutes. It consisted of running around a closed off section of Faron woods with the Beetle as a test item. I was ecstatic. Link could sprint in a console game again! Those ten minutes felt like seconds, and I was finally looking forward to the game with a new found love.

Time since then was slow. Very slow. Soon, the release date came upon us. My problem was that I didn't have a Wii. The release date came and went. December, the day after Black Friday, my mother informs me that she ordered me the Special Edition set of Skyward Sword that came with the gold Zelda Wiimote and the 25th Anniversary CD. I was so happy. I planned to buy the Wii on the first of January, this month, when I knew I could afford it... the next surprise? My mother buys the Wii for me, so I can play my new game. ♥

I admit, my expectations were still a bit low. I didn't know what the story would provide and was still clinging to OoT and MM. I think it took me about 5 minutes of game play to change my mind. It was gorgeous! Little did I know at first that the game would hold so much amazing information... and a new alphabet.

Of course, I noticed the signs around Skyloft. Then I bought my first item from Beedles Airship. Sold out...does that thing say "sold out"!? I ran to grab a sheet of paper and a pen, and began writing all the characters down that I could. Note, at this time, I had avoided spoilers to the point that I had no idea that other fans in the community had not only been working on translating the characters, but at this time were a week ahead of me and were only missing about 5 or so letters.
I kept writing, and finding new things with new characters..and eventually stumbled upon the forum at Zelda Universe. Come to find out, by the time I'm running out to share a half finished cypher, I find their almost finished one. I made a note to myself that it was there, but made a point to keep trying to find more on my own. I actually refused to write much into my own list until I'd seen it myself, just to double check them. I found a couple more characters just as the community found them. Then we were down to three left. J, Q and X.

For three weeks, I sat on an almost finished font, scouring through the game here and there as I finished the game and began Hero Mode. Those signs in Lanayru kept nagging me. I made a mental note to go back and look at them until I could figure something out. The in game graphics seemed so bloated, it was almost impossible to read them, though I did notice a pattern. I could see a few letters, and knew it said something... at the time I last looked at it, I was tired and decided to go back to it later...

Then came the Hyrule Historia scans. Those had to tell us what the characters were! After days of abusing search engines, and talking to other Zelda fans, forum users and site owners, I managed to acquire a link to the scan of the "SS Hylian" text!... to my dismay, it was gibberish, and the Japanese description claimed "this alphabet is too ancient to translate". Safe to say I was mildly heartbroken. But, none the less, I just couldn't give up. I was either going to find those remaining letters, or provide a broken font.

It was about...2am on the second of January,  mere 42 hours ago, that I found the hires version of the scan. I was ecstatic, and terrified at the same time- the characters I had drawn in photoshop didn't look perfect. I was feverish, nervous, and it took me around an hour to calm down so I could begin basically remaking the font from the ground up. If I was going to make the font, broken or not, I was going to do the best job I could. This...was a task for coffee. Lots of coffee.

By around 7am I had finally finished reimporting every glyph, reformatting them to perfection, and had saved the font. I come here to DA fully intending to upload it when I notice a message. A simple message from a user who was aware that I was attempting the now near impossible, and wished to help me find the last letters. The message proved a link to the texture image from one of the signs from Lanayru! The small text on the texture proved to be much easier to read than it had been in the game. ...Low and behold... this tiny text that had nagged my mind for three weeks, was in fact the entire alphabet repeated in a tricky way that made it look like a couple words written on the surface and repeated much like other texts in the game!

That is the final creation date for the now fully finished Skyward Sword Ancient Hylian font.

I uploaded it as soon as I could.

As I write this... and refresh the fonts page once again, it tells me that I uploaded it 1 day, 11 hours ago. The font as of this refresh has had 17,998 views and 3,783 downloads.

The story of the fonts creation got posted ti Zelda Universe early this morning and since then has spread like a wild fire from site to site, all cross posting the news, all linking directly to my DA page which provided the font. From ZU, to Kotaku, ScrewAttack, even IGN UK, and various other sites all hyping the news. Every couple minutes, even now, the download count raises by one or two numbers. I've had a hard time keeping up with it's so overwhelming.

I've spent most of the day wanting to cry, and laugh with glee. I never even thought that it would spread like this, that so many other fans would know my name in less than two days, that so many people around the world would be thanking me from the bottoms of their hearts, that it would be such a rage...

Words cannot express how thrilled I am to see that my work, with the help of other users, has made so many people so very happy.

I'm still in shock.

Thank you, everyone. Thank you so very much. ♥

I got Skyward Sword about 1.75 years ago - you can tell I'm not much of a gamer since I still haven't finished:ashamed: - but didn't go much further than the game itself. I love the game, and I'd like to get more of them(finish SS first, maybe...), but I hadn't really dug into the lore or anything. I recently learned some stuff about typography, and downloaded about 40 fonts... Long story short, I thought it might be nice to get a Hylian font or two(hoping for SS) - And this comes up while I'm reading about Sindarin, of all things. Anyway, super excited to try it:D

You make me feel like a lesser fan: all your research and hard work that you put into this takes dedication. I'm the kind of fan that researches the games and pictures and makes ideas for my own Zelda titles. It makes me want to be more engrossed in the enterprise. I have several ideas for the Zelda series. One of which, (is a idea game story line) is my dream to make in to a video game. Some are like small things like, since Link is like a music prodigy would it be cool if he could sing not actual words but unintelligible, no dialogue, short songs like Zelda in skyward sword. Wouldn't that make fangirls swoon? ;) Or even a movie Mario, Final Fantasy, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighters, Doom, Double Dragon, Max Payne, ext. ext... all had their own movies. If they came out with one there would be so much more memorabilia for the series. If you want to some of my ideas message me, visit my page to check out my artwork .

Thank you again for your hard work, with fans like you the fan experience would not be as it is today.

1. No. No no no no. Don't ever say that again. I won't put up with people dissing their own sense of fandom because of me, even if it's said in a way that means you respect me for my almost obsessive level... you're still a fan of a great game series! I share my crazy work on here because I know that it's not common to be able to think like I do about things like language, and I know people love it. I do it because I want to do it, and I share it because I want other fans to have fun with it with me. :3

If you want to make games, write stories, express your fandom however you can- do it. Enjoy it, love it, live it if that's what it means to you.

But yes..I totally agree! But there have been movie ideas come and go over the years... and the Mario Bros. movie didn't really help the games popularity; I honestly worry that a movie might kill it. lol... but on the flip side it might be amazing. I'd still watch it though even if it was cheesy as hell. hehehe

As for your artwork...I LOVE Flecks. I love it.. and your "a New Land" Hyrule map ironically has some similarities to an expanded OoT era map I designed a while back but never put online...interesting!

And like I said... I do it because I love it. It always makes me so happy to see that my crazy obsessive fandom and projects make others happy, too. ♥

I am writing a letter to Shigeru Miyamoto for a class assignment explaining what I was suggesting to you and trying to pitch my idea for my story line for Legend of Zelda game i had in mine. My friends loved the idea of a movie and said maybe we could make our own about the story i had created. even if it was bad it still would have a great story line filled with a tragic theme. I don't know about that though the Mario movie i really did enjoy it was about a video game and it had Yoshi when i watch if i did not know as much as i do now but even now it is still one heck of a movie. you are really sweet saying what you said my heart almost stopped when i began reading it. I'll probably post more pics to my page soon and the story board to my idea to when i get the chance (Did not bring camera to collage) freshmen being a freshman and you don't away think of everything. the journal entries aren't the story parts to my game just an idea i came up with. the actual story is something that came to me in a very disturbing but interesting dream.
LINK hero of Hyrule now renowned for being a legend is a resident of the castle. One day while out for a ride on Epona he decides to practice his archery. he and his fairy were accurately
powering through his targets he readied his release, aimed... fired. just before it is to late to take it back a young messenger boy had run out on the field eyes wide he realized what he had done the horror he felt was worst than any ghost. he ran up to the boy and did his best to keep the boy alive but he bleed out and dyed in his arms his blood on Link's hands. he clutch the boy in his arms and mourned to boys lost for a while saying a short prayer to the gods for his spirit. he stood up and before he knew it he was back on the ground the guards had taken him into custody and threw him in jail. He did not resist. where dreams haunted his slept and evil invaded his thoughts.
Hyrule is on fire! he stared at the ashes of the burning field as his whole world crumbled around him. through the ruins he walked carefully stepping over the remains of Hyrule rubble littered the streets homes were left abandon peoples' possessions scattered around the what was left of the town. he turned a corner and found a still partially standing house that must have survived the flames it may not have had much of a roof left but not to many bricks were gone. Link walked into the hole where the door should have been into a not to small room. light seeped through the broken windows the glass on the floor was the only thing left on them. as he turned his head his eye fell on something kind of shiny in the corner where the light hit it. As he approached it he fell a tad bit unnerved something did not sit well with him. closing in on it he noticed it was a mirror and was a figure in it he leaned in to get a closer look. what he saw next froze his body stiff and unblinking. all he could do was stand there and stare at the horror that he observed. It seem to laugh at him showing its toothy smile and bright red eyes almost seemed to glow. worst of it all was not that of its appearance but it nature the sight of this ungodly creature reminded him of very thing that he despised and stands against the root of all evil. he stares at it only to discover that the monster was himself.

What an impressive story! I thought that, if I was going to download this font, I might as well read this post. And I never thought that so much research and effort would have been put into it. It really makes me appreciate this even more. On behalf of all zelda fans who look beyond the game, I salute you! =D

I tend to "research" a lot into things I like... I don't deny that my fandoms likely do border, if not run rampant within the walls of something called "obsession". It isn't hurting anyone though. x3

*salute* ^^
I......I love you.
