Bound in ways unseen
Bound in ways unspoken
To the 'me' I've come to know
To the 'you' that won't let me go

But that's all right
I think I like it here

We don’t have to have a labeled disorder to know how restricted and bound we can feel to a mental illness. Most of us have experienced some form of depression, anxiety, or mental health struggle at one point in our lives. We know how it affects and controls our moods, our decisions, our self-image, our relationships, our lives—this thing that should be terrible and yet becomes so entwined with who we are that it starts to seep into our very identity.
Society teaches us that mental illness is deviant and "other." So if we can't find help, we learn to hide, cope, or accept it in different ways.
Soon we list our symptoms as just another part of our traits. Soon we accept something like depression as a permanent part of our reality that will never change.
Some of us even romanticize our mental health struggles and the toxic relationship it creates with ourselves.
We learn to love our pain, rather than love ourselves in spite of our pains.

We get so comfortable with it that we don't know who we are without it.

It was difficult to put all these feelings into one painting—to define the relationship we make with our own disorders in such an intimate but potentially unhealthy way (depending on how we view it). I’ve even seen it treated like a trend recently.
It's a tricky but interesting subject to me:
Where do our disorders end and we begin?

The answer is different for everyone.

This picture makes me feel so uncomfortable, and after reading your description, I can definitely see how you showed those emotions through there. I really like the red, but just the agonizer uncomfortable movement of the face. Nice work!
