A New Light by Sarah-BK A New Light by Sarah-BK
Thoughts
Yesterday a new Government was elected - one that hasn't governed for 25 years, and the last time they did things were really bad. I have mixed feelings about it, but really all I can do now is hope for the best... maybe this will be a new light.

Equipment
Canon EOS 600D
Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM
Post-processing in Adobe Photoshop CS5

I really like this photo! :D And the lightning is just perfect.
I'm not used to use Photoshop, and I was wondering how to create this kind of lightning in Photoshop? I don't know if you used photoshop for this image, but I have Photoshop CS3. Is it a filter you're adding? Maybe it's a complicated explanation, but do you know some good tutorials for creating this soft, warm light? : D

Thank you so much!

Well - lets be fair. Most of that lighting is real (: I did use photoshop to edit it, yes, but it was more for the colouring than anything else. I would have only enhanced the lighting levels to even it out (brighten the darker parts most likely). The light on the right is from my sunlit garden - these flowers in the vase were inside, on the edge of the doorstep leading to the garden :) That's why the background is lighter (the room is darker). The part on the right is darker than the left background because I had a plant there, outside too, but in the shade and closer to me than the plants on the left ^^

No - I have no tutorials, sorry :/ What I did to this photo, and many of my other photos, I learnt by myself from trial and error and paying some actual attention to how I position my objects with respect to where the light is coming from :) I might have played around with a gradient layer and blending modes (you might want to experiment with "Layer - New Fill Layer" and blending modes "Soft Light" and "Screen"). Though, it's not always photoshop that makes the lighting what it is - keep that in mind :)

Hi! Thanks for the very fast answer! : D

I just want to make sure that you know it wasn't to doubt your work at all! I guess I have to be a little careful not to make it sound like I think it's all just edited. But that was not the case! It's a really beautiful shot! : D

I see! I'd really like to play more with the lightning too, but I'm still very new in this photography-hobby, so I certainly still have much to learn! : D
But I just saw this... [link] ...picture. But maybe that is coloring too, and not exactly lightning. If that's the case, what I meant was coloring and not lightning.
I just can't seem to find anything that tells you how to change the color a bit, and when you know don't know nothing about Photoshop, it's like a jungle to figure out yourself, haha : D

Ofc! :) Please don't misunderstand me, I do know that everything is not just edited! : D
But thank you very much, I'll keep it in mind! If you have any tips about coloring, please let me know! :) I really admire your work!

No problem - some dedicated dA time before getting back to studying ;)

It's alright :) I've been where you are now before. And I used to (and still think) that sometimes effects I can't achieve as yet are edits :P But it's just a general statement that you should pay more attention to how something could REALLY be achieved :)

There is LOTS to learn! I am still a photography noob in my eyes, and I've been taking photos for years :P But the more you take photos, the more you discover ^^ Know your equipment - that is definitely useful. A 50mm f/1.8 is a waste if you don't know how to control the aperture yourself.

That is both :) But it's difficult to try figure out how she would have achieved something like that - I can only assume. Though there is definitely playing around with Gradient Layers and Blending Modes.

Well, most people won't come tell you because let's face it - it's really difficult to put into words :P Every photo cannot be edited the same way! (Why I personally don't like PS actions). Someone might make a tutorial of how they edited a particular photo, and you discover something new about photoshop (how I discovered the existence of Fill Layers), then try it out yourself and take it to another level. There's no hard fast rule. Though yes, photoshop is a jungle - possibilities are endless :P I've used so many other editing programs before PS because it is rather difficult to get at first - I've had it handy for years but only started using it less than a year ago. I once used it about 4 years ago for an eye edit, and I swear I never felt so lost in my life (if you want to laugh - I found it [link]) :P That's why I never went back to it again till last year, when I had some more knowledge of photo editing :) Even following a tutorial was useless... because I didn't understand it.

Try each setting that there is, and play around till you get something that you like. That's how I work still :P For example, grab Brightness and Contrast and see what changes. Try Selective Colour (definitely one of my favorite tools) and play around with all the bars and see what you get. Eventually your brain starts to learn more about what you can achieve and slowly slowly you start going towards tools you know will work. That is the best advice I guess I can pass on :) I promise you will learn, but only after you've tried.

Once again, it's just that I wanted to let you know that photoshop isn't a miracle maker :P It can make good photos better, not bad photos good. Thank you though, I appreciate that :meow:

Hahah, I see! : D

Thank you VERY much for your kind words and your help! : D You're so helpful!
I actually tried some of the actions, and it didn't really turn out well on any of my photos, haha. I guess you're right, so I've tried playing a bit around with Photoshop and got some (more or less) useful pictures in the end, nonetheless!
I have already discovered serveral things, but then again; there's still endless things I know nothing about though. But I'll keep trying. Thanks again, you're so kind and helpful! : D

- No problem, thanks a lot! :)

Thank you so much :meow: I could make it available as a print, as I don't allow downloads of my photos. The available size shown here is pretty small and I don't think a small print is what you want :giggle:

If you want to print a copy of the small size available here, feel free to do so as long as you don't claim it as your own :)

If I make it available for prints, you would have to buy it from deviantart not print it yourself :). I won't increase the available size for such things because I wouldn't like peope to take my work, time and effort with me getting nothing in return :) Also, I wouldn't want to make it easier for others to steal my work. Hope you understand :)

Hello again! Maybe you could consider for example sending photo to my e-mail and i could in return send money for the photo. As i live in Estonia it would be much easier for me to print this photo out myself because there is a chance that our custom would not let it pass and could send it back. Please think about it and let me know how much would you want for the photo. I swear i will use this photo for my purpose only!
