Literature Text

Pain wracks my body as I slam into the unyielding rock. I hear gasps of shock and sympathetic pain from the others.

My horn cracks. Precognition blossoms, telling me the one way I can shape my power through it to not blow it up completely.

No matter. It hurts, but I'm used to that. Even if I weren't before, I am now.

Another attack, this time the very air itself solidifying into a knife. I already saw it coming, and dodge as well as I can. I block, but not as well as I could, and my hastily raised shield lets through some of the magic and cuts my flank.

Discord has been devastating the entire world we know for… it feels like forever, though with how much damage he does it must be only a few days.

I have no chance of beating him. I know that. I can see the entire fight before me, and only one path leads to victory – and it assumes the arrival of alicorns, more than there are in an entire world.

That it even appeared to me is probably because of the twisting nature of time around this embodiment of disharmony. His reactions so hair-trigger that a million paths open up every second.

But I can still read him, and I have a plan.

I'm letting myself die a death of a thousand cuts. It keeps him interested, makes him let me survive longer. He's been taunting me, goading me, telling me that I couldn't make a scratch. And as I expend another precious month's worth of stored power to deflect a rock the size of a house, my thoughts wander.

First to the shattered remnants of the Rainbow. They're visible from here, though barely – the amount of dust in the air is almost like fog, or the mist that plays around the base of a waterfall.

I wonder, was my name meant for this? All my life, all the lives of my forebears, intended for this, this… battle with a god?

My inattention costs me, and his claw shears off a good portion of my left flank.

A quick application of magic sears the nerves that connect to that part of my body.

My mark is gone, but… no matter. I don't have time to mourn. If I stop this frantic pace for a moment, then it was all for nothing. And if I let myself really think about all we've lost, I'll just start crying and never stop.

Another burst of power, turning a deathblow to the head into a slash along the cheek.

Another –

And my magic cuts out halfway through. I slump, dry, barely caring about the high speed tail swipe that took off part of my mane and destroyed my left hip joint.

My eyes slide closed, and I feel myself lifted. He's decided to gloat.

Something about how he was impressed, and I can almost feel the cocky grin he's sporting. We're barely ants to him.

"H'y, D'scr'd," I mumble. "Wht's my n'me?"

He laughs. It's amusing to him that I might not remember.

All the paths of the future converge down to one. Time to die.

Sorry, everyone. Megan, Danny, Molly, Magic Star… Twilight, Firefly, Posey, Sparkler, Applejack... and Surprise. Heh. Bet you'll love this.

"It's Mimic."

This time, my voice is strong and clear. He stops, shocked.

"My final act is, someone who hasn't enough power left to do THIS."

I used decades of stored energy, of my entire line, fighting him.

But I have centuries.

Three hundred and fifty years of magic, concentrated down into a single burst of overwhelming force.

I'm not very violent. None of us are. But maybe there's something in everything the humans told us.

Because nothing is so satisfying as kicking that bastard's teeth in one thousand, five hundred and eighty three times in a single second.

Something sparkles with a faint purple light over in the distance, by the ruins of the Rainbow, and I see Celestia and Luna take surprised notice.

Discord's in shock. One of his fangs actually broke, and he's bleeding. He's not perfect, and I feel the two alicorns by the Rainbow take heart in that.

My horseshoes dissolve silently. Nothing left, for real now.

A grin forces its' way through my lips.

"You lose."
Confound these ponies, et cetera.

This is second or possibly third level recursive fanfic, inspired by an event in *alexwarlorn's Pony POV series, specifically in "Second family".
The event was illustrated here: [link] and it's this that really got me to make it. I wondered about the implications of the name "mimic" and realized that she could be as true to her name as anyone ever was.
Side note: this is probably what convinced Discord to depower Ponies before taunting them.

The last six ponies that Mimic mentions are the G1 versions of the G4 main cast. Does she know? Who can tell.

Best music for this is something along the lines of: [link]

Mimic only appeared on two episodes... which were a two part episode. And then she never appeared again... it always kind of bothered me that they made up this super powerful unicorn in the series just as a plot device. Seriously, some of the problems the ponies had in later episodes could have been easily fixed with Mimic's powers (and the golden horseshoes).

What is she mimicking? Or is it that others mimic HER?
Saphroneth's avatar
My idea was, her name is "mimic", and she was basically pretending to be "a less powerful pony than she actually is". So she got him to let his guard down and bring her close, then kicked his teeth in.

Still a good piece.
For some reason Mimic's 'You lose' line to Discord reminded me of how in one episode of Justice League Darkseid calls Superman a loser right before he apparently dies in an explosion.

It's what's known as a "Facing the bullets one liner" on TVTropes - the last defiant word before the end. I think the example you mention is more of a Bond One Liner (the one liner before killing your target) depending on who the "he" is that dies. I've not actually seen the Justice League material in any format (aside from the odd reference to it).
The "he" that dies was Darkseid.

So it does fit, then. Right-o.

Thank you for posting this. I don't think I ever said that.

How was seeing Mimic's sacrifice in the fic?
Saphroneth's avatar
It was... kind of strange, actually. Having all the context. I'm sort of glad I made the setting so vague that it could fit without too much difficulty - the only certain facts were that the sisters were there.
It also adds a whole other dimension to it to know that she was their mother in this life.

Oh - assuming you have less time constraint now, I'll just remind you of the Trixie as Element of Magic fic I did. If I recall correctly, last time I told you of that you were busy with Origins.

It's great to read of Mimic going out with one last act of not just defiance, but an infliction of actual pain on this monster.

Of course, then I reflect on how he punished her for that and I shudder. Poor Mimic!
Saphroneth's avatar
I like to think that her last tiny burst of magic was intended to defy him even that satisfaction by wrecking her own spinal column, rendering her immune to feeling pain.
But even if that weren't the case, she went out in triumph.

A brave and incredible pony to the very end  I love Mimic's ability of prerecognition, that and the level of guts she took to blow one of Discord's fangs clear out of his oversmug mouth. MMMMGHHH!!! Just the thought of seeing him cringe in that second of abrupt horror and pain... realizing he isn't as much a "GOD" as he lets on is just fantastically admirable~

Thanks for the comment!
The precognition, as I understand it, was present for the original character in G1 (though not to this level). And yeah, I was aiming for a balance between the sense of hopelessness that yes, this is an impossible fight; the triumph that she managed to hurt him; and the quiet happiness as her last second of precognitive power showed him being beaten. In other words, that "You lose" is on more than one level.

It seems to have helped my writing to have visited Thermopylae. Same sense there.

Well keep it up~ <3

Have some Pony sci fi. I just posted it minutes ago.
MasterPeach's avatar
I'll check it out some~ :3
Wow....that was EPIC.

Although, I haven't seen G1--how does Mimic have centuries of magic? And why were Celestia and Luna there?
Saphroneth's avatar
Me neither, actually...

The "centuries of magic" is based partly on artistic license, and partly on how those golden horseshoes she has are a centuries-old relic tied to her line's life force. When they're moved too far apart in one episode, she apparently starts to die (and hence the plot of that episode is to find the durn things).
Celestia and Luna are there because, in the loose canon side story about Pinkie, the Alicorns and Draconequus are responsible for rebuilding universes, and Discord locked off the Equestria one from outside interference from them when he went on his rampage - therefore, they must have already been there. That and it allows the "He is not invulnerable." moment.
(Side note: Luna talked about the events as if she was there, though of course she could have just seen them in the well of truth. But since Celestia used the elements on Discord, and the normal result of Discord being a free agent for more than a few days is, well, the end of the world... it implies she did so shortly after he really got going.)

Awesome fic, and I love the ending of it! It reminds me of something from Ironman 2

"If you could make god bleed, people will stop believing in him."

I think that's a good implication of that last paragraph, Mimic HURT Discord. She proved he could be hurt, that he's not invincible. That's probably something not even he was believed was possible.

I can see this as one of those "hope springs eternal" moments. The moment the situation went from completely hopeless to winnable.

Great work!
Saphroneth's avatar
That's my idea. He lost on no less than three levels.
First, Mimic disproved his boast that she wouldn't put a scratch on him.
Second, she proved he was killable.
Third, she awakened the Element of Magic. Even if it was only for a fraction of a second, it showed the Rainbow's power wasn't gone. And imagine her fierce joy in that last instant, when the Element was active and her prophetic horseshoe also still was, and she saw Discord's defeat.
Kendell2's avatar
Yeah, good point.

I find it ironic that Discord ALWAYS spells his own demise. The ironic thing? By destroying the Rainbow of Light, he made it STRONGER. If it couldn't stop him and the Elements could, that's the only explanation.
