So... This time Camille Desmoulins (the one at the front) and Antoine de Saint-Just (blonde one). They both truly detested each other, thus the picture referes to the exchange of malice between them, which is appropriately presented in the quotation below:

"Camille Desmoulins once said of Saint-Just: "He carries his head like a Holy Sacrament." "And I," replied Saint-Just, "will make him carry his like Saint Denis." "

You needn't know the legend of Saint Denis to guess that it was kind of threat. (To clarify I added sculpture of St. Denis in the background) As you can see they harboured a grudge against each other. And, unfortunatelly, the threat of Saint-Just finally became granted - Desmoulins went to the scaffold (mostly because of S-J's attempts). Poor Camille :<

Once again I feel obliged to aware those who don't recognize those guys:

Camille Desmoulins (1760-94) was the main journalist of the revolution. He became famous since he encouraged mob to storm the bastille (yes, that was him...). Then he started issue his newspapers (that was full of offence against politicians). He was rather cotroversial figure, as he hadn't constant political views. Due to his little knowledge about politics, he was easy to manipulate. This lost him - his firce objection to the terror of Committees. He behaved as he was unconcious of consequences. Apart from his naivety, he was enchanting (:P) - adult proned to cry and shout, but still able to be kind. A little bit conceited (ok, ok, not just a bit...), but still likeable :) He was dubbed The Prosecutor of the Lantern or First Apostole of the Revolution (well he called himself so). Beheaded with dantonists on 5th of April 1794.

Louis Antoine de Saint-Just (1767-94) was the revolutionist during the Great French Revolution. He was close companion of Maximilien Robespierre. As he was greatly engaged in the Reign of Terror, he was dubbed the Archangel of Terror. He took part in a few military missions and issued many irades. As a member of Committee of Public Safety he became known for his ruthlessness and many charge sheets against so called traitors.

They both came from departament Aisne (Picardy) and I love them both (why they hated each other?! :<)

My first real digart! ^^ [hate touchpad...] and it sucks xD

Oh, I see. Because the first time I saw St.Just's image was on Britannica Encyclepedia, it wasn't in colour.
History of French Revolution is been nearly "ignore" in some Chinese-speaking world's history teaching, especially in junior high education. Probably due to the gap of language and some strange phobia of France latter socialism movement.

Thank you. I also have doubts, but I find David's portret [link] most reliable as David knew Saint-Just personally. Prud'hon was living in Burgundy during Revolution, so it is little probable that he based his picture on S-J's real appearance :)
