Roxie

Description

In the throes of a summer evening, the outdoor concert venue pulsed with the heartbeat of heavy metal. The air was thick with the scent of freshly cut grass, distant rain, and the tantalizing tang of beer from the concession stands. Amidst the sea of black band tees and denim, a fiery beacon of crimson hair stood out like a flame in the night. This was Roxanne, or Roxie as she was known on stage, the sultry vocalist of the up-and-coming metal band, Hexwax.

Roxie lounged on a worn picnic blanket, her friends scattered around her like discarded guitar picks. Her leather jacket creaked as she leaned back on her hands, eyes closed, face tilted up to the setting sun. The growl of the bass and the scream of the guitars from the band on stage vibrated through her, and she couldn't help but mouth the lyrics with a smirk.

Her best friend, Jade, a pixie-like blonde with a penchant for mischief, was nestled to her left, grinning like the Cheshire Cat. On her right was Mason, the stoic drummer of their band, his arms folded across his broad chest, a bottle of beer dangling from his fingertips.

Jade, unable to contain her excitement, leaned over and snatched Roxie's beer from the blanket. "I gotta tell you a secret, Rox," she shouted over the music, a wicked glint in her eye. Roxie raised an eyebrow but didn't protest as Jade tilted the bottle, pouring a small vial of shimmering liquid into the amber depths.

Mason furrowed his brow. "Jade, what the hell are you doing?"

Jade just giggled and handed the bottle back to Roxie. "It's just a little... enhancement."

Roxie, always the good sport, clinked her bottle against Jade's and took a long swig, draining the contents. She wiped her mouth with the back of her hand, her eyes watering slightly from the unexpected bitterness.

The sun dipped lower, casting the sky in hues of orange and purple, and the band on stage kicked into their final song. Roxie was on her feet, headbanging, her red hair whipping about her like a bonfire in a storm. She didn't notice it at first, the strange sensation in her feet. But when she looked down, her eyes widened in disbelief.

Her boots, once form-fitting leather, were now strained to the point of busting. Her feet were growing, lengthening and widening at an alarming rate. She let out a surprised laugh, stumbling back onto the blanket. Her friends stared, mouths agape, as Roxie's feet grew to nearly ten times their normal size, the seams of her boots groaning in protest.

Roxie, unable to contain her laughter, kicked off her ruined boots, revealing her now monstrously large, bare feet. She wriggled her toes, each one the size of a sausage, and laughed harder. "Jade," she gasped, tears streaming down her cheeks, "what the hell did you give me?"

Jade, caught between horror and hilarity, clapped a hand over her mouth, her shoulders shaking with suppressed laughter. Mason just shook his head, a reluctant smile tugging at his lips.

Roxie, ever the performer, raised her enormous feet in the air, waving them in time with the music. The crowd around them took notice, and soon a circle formed, people cheering and laughing at the spectacle. Roxie, with her massive feet and wild red hair, became the impromptu star of the concert, her laughter ringing out above the metal music that served as the soundtrack to her ridiculous predicament. And she wouldn't have it any other way.
