Icons of the Library
Third Edition

Samantha Wright
18 October, 2010

It's been two years since Library Icons 2nd Ed. came out. This is, of course, too long, but things came up as they so often do. This release includes 918 icons in three different formats (Windows, PNG, and OS X), supporting the maximum resolution of Windows (256×256) and Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.6 (512×512). The PNG release is also 512×512.

Usage

Windows: The best way to install the icons is fairly dangerous and extremely time-consuming. It involves manually replacing the icons used by each DLL and EXE within Windows and various other interesting programs. I can't do this for you, since you probably run a different version of Windows than I do, and because distributing the files would be something of a matter of copyright infringement. Many people like to use some kind of icon manager or packager to avoid this, by tweaking the registry instead, but there are too many out there to pick just one or to do them all, and the experience is really somewhat sub-standard compared to what a good, hard modification job can actually provide. If anyone else is willing to make icon packages, however, I will endorse them.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, and happy modding!

Glad you like. I think I'd probably go for a flat style if I ever re-visited this. No one seems to have gone after anything like minimalistic steampunk.

Awesome, it finally wanted to download today! This needs to be shared more and more alternatives to download it. By far the best set of icons I have found on the net and I have been doing it a long time. Great dedication to a hard long journey. You have inspired me to start doing steampunk desktops designs and I have started to create icon packs for interactive desktops. Thank you once again. Inspiring!

I'm really sorry I didn't get back to you earlier! It's bizarrely hard to find a decent place to upload stuff this big. Maybe I'll try a few more torrent sites... Anyway, glad you like!

It is very sad, I have tried for 3 days to download this file and it says the site for download has been stopped due to stream usage. I can't even find it in torrents. Any suggestions? I really want this icon set badly... by far the best set I have ever seen.

How do I use these?

That depends on how thorough you want to be! (And partially on what version of Windows you have.) One of the easiest ways to get started is with a program like Types or IconPackager. If you're feeling really brave, you can actually go and modify Windows system files permanently with a tool like Resource Hacker. Because of the work involved, I'm afraid I never had a chance to make an easy install package for Windows like some of the newer icon sets do.

Have you any plans for making anymore? I absolutely adore this set and wish I could replace all of my standard icons.
Don't suppose you would consider releasing some PSDs of some of the filetypes and folder bases?

I keep meaning to! And in fact I even started on a template for the file icon. It'll happen—soon this time, I swear.
