DC and MARVEL both reasoned that -wait long enough and you can perp any ret-con you want, and not enough people are around that remember the original story, to say the writers nay.

I had the Berni Wrightson issues (#1 and so on) in handsome 2-issue editions, BUT they were stolen along with almost every comic I had stored in the cellar. The ones elsewhere in the house were somehow overlooked- fortunantly. I have since taken measures to restore security that had been let to go lax.

Swamp Thing had superstrength and a healing factor, but it was hard & painful for him to talk. (DC thus made him a Misunderstood Monster). He was restored to human form by Arcane who wanted his power for himself. BUT he wanted to use it for evil, and so Alex Cannon or whoever he was (comics were stolen, so I can't check them).had to take back his power so Arcane could not use it for mass murder.

Wrecking a car, plowing through a hail of bullets,,,,I liked that. BUT not lying helpless for a whole issue as reactor waste ate away his body totally. He sent his mind through the Green and grew a new body. Now he could "teleport" by dissolving his body, and regrowing a new one elsewhere.

The stories were sometimes repulsive and sickening, and DC stopped submitting them to the CCA .

Does it make you feel better knowing that the CCA is pretty much dead now?

That's not so much my problem as the continuity mess DC has made of its entire stable. One reboot and history change after another ! Not even ZOO CREW escaped unscathed. I think the last decent story they had was the Oz-Wonderland War. The post-Crisis stories I never bought or even seen, but the Wiki summaries turned me off ! (comics seem to have disappeared from newstands since 1986)Fortunantly this complete run escaped the burglaries and home invasions. I took inventory of what was left of my comics.

I boosted security and ...

Sad to hear about your comics, I'm not very into them, but I know some stuff in general and collect a number here and there.
I read a bit about the Swamp Thing, and really liked the story and some of the variants of it, don't remember which one is canon, but I loved one of them in which the Swamp Thing thought he was the guy, but in reality he had his memories, and the original scientist was dead. really cool stories : D

In the original story, Alex Cannon ran out of his lab screaming -burned to the bone by the bomb explosion- and threw himself into the swamp, there to be regenerated by the bio-regeneration potion into Swamp Thing. Later it's stated that Alex died, probably dead even before he threw himself into the swamp, and that the Green chose to create a plant elemental, giving him the dead man's memories & thought-patterns, the latest of future members of the Parliament of Trees. The Heap was one of them.

Another bit of ret-conning even before Crisis, was Black Canary. The mad star-creature Aquarius killed her husband and affected her with the same blast, giving her the Canary Cry. Later,DC decided that she died as the result of the blast, but not before her memory was copied into the comatose body of her daughter, so that she had a past and a memory to relate to.(The Wizard afflicted her with the Canary Cry as a baby and she was kept in a coma ,growing up in such, but now could be revived.)There was NO way that could be read into the original story of her moving to Earth-I and joining the JLA.

That was titled "The Anatomy Lesson", right ?
I've given some deceptively subtle titles to some of my fan-fics. "The Job Interview" (a fight to the death between Wendy and a demon !) was one. "The Art Critic" (a minor demon defaces a tapestry !),"An Audience with the Director" (another battle between 2 persons).
