Lady From Shanghai 2

Next installment in series of drawings based on the mirror sequence in Orson Welles's The Lady from Shanghai. Alternate title: "Killing you is killing myself."

This drawing was far more time-consuming than the previous one, more details, finer gradations, overlap of images. But I loved drawing Everett Sloane's face!

Media: India ink and crow quills on Bristol board.
Size: Approximately 10"x7".

Great detail..

This is really great! You put an amazing amount of detail into the whole thing, including the darker half. I'm very impressed with that!

Thank you! Love your icon BTW, I’m a huge fan of Tom Waits.

Haha thanks! I was thinking about changing my icon since I just got back on DA and it's from 2004 or 2005, but maybe I'll keep it!

I like the transition from lined work to cross hatch work with those two faces! Well done!

Thank you! It was hard to do, usually one is not working from photo imagery like that, but I enjoyed the challenge.  :D

This is a very interesting artwork. I like the shades.

Thanks!  The shading took some time/effort, but it was worth it.

Your cross hatching is very good in this. Very precise. I feel like I could easily pick up a novel in Barnes and Noble and have this be the cover.

Thank you very much for the kind comment. Glad you like the drawing!

This is really brilliant. All your other stuff is lovely, too, but I keep coming back to this one. The face fading into the cross-hatching is just phenomenal. If there was anything to complain about, maybe it's the very linear composition. However, the figures fill the space nicely and the dynamic of stark blacks and stark whites with the hatched areas just creates a really awesome impression. I know you had a reference, but I think the drawing is better than that image for these same reasons. This is just a very excellent piece.

Sorry for late response, but just wanted to say thanks for such a nice, in-depth comment. I'm glad you like it, and I think I agree regarding what works about the piece. This is more stylistically what I've been wanting to aim for (in terms of detail, use of line, tone), so it is definitely encouraging to hear. :D

The crosshatching in this is awesome, particularly in the face that is in deep shadow.
