Callie Maggotbone - Elvgren Pinup

While not a fan of "Ugly Americans" and only vaguely knowledgeable of classic pin-up art, I have to stand firm in thinking that this piece is fantastic. The wit of playing with the basis (the actual pin-up) and incorporating a pop-cultural element is strong and as sharp as the hook at the end of the under-hat tentacle. Though I do have some qualms with this piece. The figure of the woman is almost in sharp contrast to the rest of the composition, considering how clean and smooth she looks juxtaposed against such a grainy, desert-like background. This would be less of a problem had the graininess been just a part of the overall work instead of such a prevailing element, so instead of standing out in a brilliant way, the woman stands out rather awkwardly instead.
One major virtue of the artist is using minimal coloring solutions to convey the atmosphere; best examples of this are the hat and the clothing.
Overall, a decent piece worthy of a view.
