QuicknDirty DoF (Depth of Field) by Sabine62

By Sabine62
Someone asked for this in German so I thought that maybe an English version might come in handy for those without any experience with DoF yet :)

Forst of all thank you for sharing with us this tutorial
Difficult to know how to find Aperture and ClippingR:? (Confused) :? (Confused) :? (Confused)
Can you accept to explain this with an exanple?
Sabine62's avatar
Very welcome:)
What do you mean, it's difficult to find Aperture and ClippingR? The options in the menu? Look at page 2, it begins with a text and image explaining how to find them.
The example on how to use them is below in the text on page 3.
Good luck!

I read again and again this page2, really not yet entered this into my brain.

I haven't succeeded even when applying what is written in page 2 :(

PS: I know how to get this DOF effect but with photoshop but I wanted to succeed to get it from MDB3D :? (Confused)

Really bette than what I got with photoshop :wow:
It's the birthday gift for batjorge

1/Can you show me in a screenshot where you have clicked for Z2 and Z1?

2/How have you chosen Aperture and ClippingR? Is it a mathematic calculation?

Thank you Sabine
Sabine62's avatar
Aperture and clicking: the values depend on too many things to give guidelines. It's just trial and error, mostly. Usually if you use back and front dof, 0,02 is ok for aperture, and clippingR will determine the amount of blur. If using only dof in the back you can use 0,1 or 1 for aperture, more blur, but much slower!

So for Z1 where have you clicked on?
so for Z2 where have you clicked on?

Z1 (closest by) on left, z2 (far away) on the right

I missed this one!

This is a snippet from MB3D's ReadMe for arriving at an aperture setting:

For example: if you would like to have a camera aperture of 1:4 with a focal length of 100mm and the Zsharp point should be 1m in front of the camera, the 'Aperture' value must be 1/4 * 100 / 1000 = 0.025.

Have you noticed a correlation between the ClippingR value and the Z-Start. Mid or End values in the Position panel? I'm looking to set ClippingR by some means other that guessing.

Thanks :D

Welcome, Ingrid! :)

I have taught myself to render with as low a Far Plane (keeps Z-end small, and makes low values for the dof possible) as possible (under 10). That way not only the Aperture AND ClippingR can be kept nice and low (and thus quick rendering!), but also the steps for Waking and Sliding. Also I can let the far away structures disappear into the mists with Lighting>Ambience>Depth.

The formula given by the readme.txt is all nice and well, but seems only hypothetically applicable in this environment with all its loose end variables. And also, the right amount of blur (always a combi of Aperture and ClippingR, if Aperture is high, ClippingR can be lower) for the non-focussed-on areas I really can only find by trial and error. Oh well, I stick to the low focus plane/low Z1/Z2=low(er)aperture, which is what this whole formula boils down to in the end. And the ClippingR in the opposite ratio ;)

Sorry I cannot give you some better information, Ingrid, this is all I can come up with!

That sums up nicely what I observed fiddling with it today - larger aperture plus smaller clipping radius processed quicker and gave about the same results as other settings that took much longer. I wondered about the far plane also as I tend to reduce it when done navigating. Also found that a large Z-end value is a good indication DoF will take longer. Think I'll check what blurring options there are in a photo editor. ;)

:} There's great stuff out there nowadays, and a few are Really good. Most of the times I only adjust levels and color depth a bit (if at all), but programs like photoscape can edit renders without too much damage as in banding... Others are dramatically bad. Bought a copy of Corel's Paintshop Pro X, and it's useless :S
Well good luck hunting! :)
