Description
In an effort to push back against censorship in a creative and artistic way, I've decided to lean fully into the controversial aspects of my writing, studying other infamous works in an attempt to avoid some of the same pitfalls. Heavenshade is a story deeply-rooted in forbidden subject matter with lots of dark and mature themes. The difference here is that the characters actually address these issues directly and attempt to handle them with grace. Personally, I don't believe exploring these themes creatively through artistic mediums inherently condones or normalizes them. The author of Lolita for example was never actually charged with sexually abusing children, nor was V.C. Andrews ever indicted on incest, so based on their experiences, it really boils down to a matter of intent. I'm going out of my way to make it abundantly clear that these topics are only meant to be analyzed within the context of the story itself. Anything beyond that crosses into dangerous territory that could be harmful unless it's meant to address the issues themselves. The sex scene in Heavenshade isn't gratuitous or explicit, but emotionally intimate, focusing on the depth of Rouge's care and Tails' reassurance. It's a crucial part of the story that cements their emotional weight. Everything that comes after ties back to Rouge's love and affection. It's not about ownership or possession, but the lengths she's willing to go through to save him, even if it means accepting herself as a being of pure evil. From there, it comes down to how readers perceive her, because if their relationship turns out to be a net positive for Tails, the moral questions open up as to why and whether or not it should continue.
Yeah... complex.
