Description
Too drunk for Asgard
Acrylic on canvas 2009
An inebriated viking has forsaken Valhalla and somehow made it to Asgard, where, upon consuming several barrels of the mead of inspiration, has mounted his pink Narwhal steed and with his last tankard full, sped off across Bifrost, which traverses both outer and inner space, toward Midgard to cause untold amounts of drunken mayhem. Its purpose, if it has one, is to inspire the courage to journey to distant lands, and the process of learning another language. I also wanted to paint a Narwhal and do my part in perpetuating the historical fallacy that vikings wore horned helmets.
Being interested in Teutonic, and all other mythology, one can always find places within those stories to receive, interpret or base an idea. That is what mythology is for, to inspire us mortals to find and try to understand the myriad of archetypes within, and also to connect the past with the present.
Absent from this picture is the ever-vigilant Heimdall, who should be guarding the rainbow bridge and would never stand for this kind of behaviour.
