Oh boy, this was an interesting watch. First off this movie has no reason to exist and I thought that before seeing the movie whenever it was announced.
As a kid I never really got that into the animated series. This is mostly for the fact that I was more interested into what was going on Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon. Another reason is because I avoided Disney Channel because even as a kid I really didn't like their sitcoms.
The point I'm trying to make is I don't really have any nostalgia torwards the original show. This is an important thing to note within any review I believe. I wasn't exactly sure what to expect when it came to this movie. I had expected it to be in theaters rather than be a DCOM whenever it was first announced but even though it does have a lower budget that doesn't mean it can't be good.
This movie falls under 3 genres Action, Comedy, and Drama which I think is probably the easiest way to break down this movie.
In the first scene I could tell what I was in for with this movie. It takes place at a bridge but for some reason the actors aren't actually there as it's just green screened. Which green screened action scenes are always some of the cheesiest. In this scene there are a lot of camera cuts and it just looks really bad and fake. I will say that they do improve later on and it becomes a lot less distracting. At the very least I can say that it is not the worst I have ever seen.
I had expected Rufus to be in the movie much more than he was and be obnoxious. He's barely in the movie and really just acts like an animal. The CGI is your standard TV Movie type deal but Rufus does look better than Scooby-Doo, Garfield, and the Smurfs in their live-action movies that were on the big screen.
So then who is the comic relief? Probably Ron at least I'm guessing. He wasn't funny and his voice was annoying. The actor that played him was without a doubt the worst of this movie. He is costantly making these faces that looks as though he had a stroke. Why the voice? Why is he doing this voice it's annoying fake accent that makes no since. Ron from the series didn't sound like that so why do you?
As far as the comedy goes though most of it is pretty bad. This movie makes a lot of references torwards modern day trying to seem "hip." Instagram, Selfies, Live-Streaming, and freaking Duckface are all mentioned within this movie. It's actually quite sad if I'm being honest. There are a few jokes that do working though nothing that made me die laughing but I did get about 3 chuckles in.
Next is the drama. This is movie is mellow dramatic for no real reason. It doesn't help that these actors aren't all that good. As well as being an action movie it tries to be a school drama as well and it adds all the clichés in trust me. This movie it's self is very cliché and just predictable. I won't go into all of them but I will say that there were times I rolled my eyes or cringed or just chuckled at the pure cheesyness of some of these lines. Tik-tok users good news you have some new lines to steal.
Maybe if I were kid I would have enjoyed this movie more or maybe if I had watched the show more as a kid I would have like the movie less. But as it stands this movie was bad but it wasn't the worst thing ever. I wouldn't recommend it there isn't really enough here to worry about. This movie will age poorly and ultimately be forgotten about. I also really hope that ended wasn't trying to indicate a sequel or spin-off series.
