Description

With such an ancient point of divergence, getting clear records of the effective point of divergence is impossible. In this particular case, it is the lack of a record that reveals more. The works of Enheduanna, an ancient Akkadian priestess and daughter of Sargon of Akkad, widely regarded as the world's first emperor, is totally absent. All records before her are identical to those of Homeline, while those after her are nearly incomprehensible. We can guess at a disaster, perhaps a plague, striking the early Akkadian Empire, as the effective point of divergence.

The modern world is dominated by cultures we would consider fusions of many known ancient cultures, which is in truth no different from any other timeline this far ahead in history. Like many other timelines, including our own, the world is gripped in a cold war. The basis of this cold war is evidently different takes on the nature of man, with one side favoring what we would identify as a Hobbesian view, and another with views similar to those of moderate to radical factions of French republicans during the French Revolution. But at its heart, this cold war is a set of geopolitical rivalries that have been strung together through a complex series of alliances. The local powers have no knowledge of nuclear physics, and consequently no fear of mutually assured destruction.

Here is a brief rundown of the major powers:

Euskandel Realm - A liberal democracy centered on what we would identify as the Basque culture. The Euskandel used to possess a large colonial empire, possessing large swaths of Africa and the Americas, but they have declined. The Euskandel Revolution that placed the current regime in power infamously slaughtered the entire Euskandel royal family. The current government seeks to reclaim portions of the Euskandel colonial empire through war.

Xipiltec Empire - A Mesoamerican state that was once an Euskandel colony. Although originally a republic modeled on the Euskandel Realm, the Xipiltec have been an empire ever since an ambitious general took control of the government through a coup. The Xipiltec rather infamously have a religion that venerates the "blood sacrifice" of their god, which they recreate with prisoners.

Tsuevish Ryik - A state comprised of Germanic and Hunnic peoples. The current government is a constitutional monarchy dominated by Tsuevish nationalists, who have used the victory over the Xhalka Empire to gain power. The religion of the Tsuevish is what might be described as a monotheistic warrior religion, which is strange in this world of pantheons.

Socincov Kingdom - Another constitutional monarchy, descended culturally from what Homeline archaeologists call the Trypillian culture, with considerable admixture from groups such as pseudo-Scythians and other Central Asian peoples. A latecomer the war against Xhalka, the Socinov Kingdom is evidently a new player in the modern geopolitics of Europe proper, and has historically managed its own sphere of influence without concern for the goings-on of other states.

Republic of Djoutai - An African colonial state in South America. Evidently, Djoutai was never a formal colony, colonized instead by private parties. There is a strong free market culture among the Djoutai, with very few checks on their stock exchanges. A possible investment opportunity?

Zumovi Confederation - Descended from a proto-Suomi culture, the Zumovi have a reputation for being bloodthirsty warriors. They worship the same god as the Tsuevish, but as part of a pantheon of other warrior deities, some of which are historical heroes of the Zumovi.

Arvernix Empire - An absolute monarchy descended from the Gallic tribes, evidently surviving from several invasions from Central Europe and one from North Africa. Like their Euskandel rivals, the Arvernix had a large colonial empire, which is now a shadow of its former self. The Arvernix religion, based on nature deities, is an international religion that the Arvernix priesthood controls.

Selidon Empire - Descended from the ancient tribes of northern Britain, the Selidon are known for being master seafarers and possess the largest navy on the planet. In the past, the Selidon were ferocious pirates, terrorizing northern Europe and, later, the Americas. The Selidon are also monotheists, worshiping the sea as a manifestation of their god.

Etrusci Empire - What we can presume is an alternate Rome never created the large empire as we have seen in Homeline, and so the culture of the Etrusci remain confined to the Italian peninsula. Unfortunate, because their language is similar enough to classical Latin that our translators were able to decipher their texts.

Damat Empire - A people descended not only from the locals, but also from colonial ancient Egyptians. The Damat believe their king is the legitimate pharaoh of Egypt, and they still worship a derivative of the ancient Egyptian pantheon.

Empire of Wiu - Perhaps this planet's juggernaut, and the single largest economy and population on the planet. The Wiu are not Han Chinese, having significant differences from them, but similar ideas exist between them, such as that of an absolute monarch ruling with the blessing of Heaven. The Wiu have always been the dominant power on the planet, even during the heyday of European colonization, while they themselves have never participated much in colonization.

Mujendo Empire - An Indus river valley civilization, which in this timeline seems to have been central to the region since time immemorial. The Mujendo Empire is infamously aggressive, and its current government seeks to reclaim lost glories by expanding westward.

Xhalka Empire - A Central Asian peoples that settled along the Great Hungarian Plain. The recent losers of a major war, where they fought three great powers at once. Predictably, they lost. Strangely for losers of wars, the Xhalka seem to hold no grudges against their enemies, blaming the war on their past leadership and content to be at peace with its neighbors.

Wow.
Socincov comes from Tripillian culture? Shouldnt that have mean that they won against the yamna, so the germanics and gauls wouldnt have evolved?
Or they delayed the advance enough for maintian part of their culture and limite the yamna advance in Europe enough for prevent the indoeuropean conquest of Iberia, Italy and Scandinavia? Or the yamnas simpl bordered them to the north by OTL modern Polska?
Socincov language is indoeuropean, or have retained its ancient structure?
Xhalka sounds similar to khalka mongols. Are they related to mongols, or just a general syberian people, like magyars?

Why jew monotheism has been unsuccesful in this world? There were good reasons for it triumphed in our world, why not in this?
