Odd, though, that it plays without a record on the mandrel...

(Incidentally, the earliest phonographs used "listening tubes", much like a stethoscope, for playback - although they did not simultaneously use a horn).

Interestingly enough, some early phonographs in the 1890s used a sort of headphone for playback: called "listening tubes", they were like a stethoscope, with the end fitting over the soundbox. 

Many coin-opersted phonographs in the "penny arcades" used them as well.  7@=e
