Chapter Two: Into the Wild
Anselm awoke before his sister, with the fiercest thirst he could remember.
The pale light of dawn shone through the cave’s entrance, and a breeze stirred among the fallen autumn leaves; softly and sadly they rustled, still damp from yesterday’s rain. There was a chilly scent in the air that hinted at winter–though it would have to be the earliest winter Anselm could bring to mind.
He rose and went outside, breathing deeply. The sun hadn’t yet risen above the treetops, and the slightest mist drifted along the floor of the ravine as it often does on such mornings; yet the sky was pale overhead, with no promise of further storm. He didn’t think their pursuers had much chance of tracking them down now–as far as they were concerned, the royal children might be anywhere in the length and breadth of the Widowswood.
That much was well.
