When I was a kid I went swimming on the lake I live on and one time an alligator had sneaked up behind me, and had it not been for my dad to notice and yell out to me to get out of the water, who knows what could have happened (though it wasn't really really big but not tiny either maybe like 5 feet or sm)

Even though nothing bad happened that day and I don't look back on that memory as traumatizing, scary yes, but not scarring, up to this day I still often have nightmares of being attacked by alligators and watching people and animals being mauled by them (even last night I had one of them)

Idk why but these nightmares show no signs of stopping and still pop in here and there and I have them like once every few months or so

like

??? it was scary but not ??? ?? that scary???? ?????

If it helps alligators 5 feet and length don't attempt to eat people. They eat crawdads, bugs, small snakes, frogs and turtles. If it was 5 feet it either was scared you were trying to kill it or may have saw a snake, frog, bug, or turtle near you and wanted to eat that. Basically either it was in fight or flight mode or it may not have even noticed you were there unless the gator was a lot larger then you thought.

Oh we got a lot of pictures and it was small compared to how big they get locally (12-14+ feet)

My family has come to the conclusion it thought I was a distressed fish due to all the splashing I was making, but could have easily attacked out of fear once it realized I was much bigger than that

When you're younger your brain is still in development and so you don't fully understand things like you might now. So as you're younger your brain is still learning things that build your character later on in life. So if something traumatizing happens to you when you're younger you go in shock and your brain develops that trait into something similar to adrenaline. This is why you might be still "scared" of it when you grow up because you brain has been taught to always be afraid of the "shock incident" and will always go in alert when presented to similar situations throughout the day. The best way to get rid of this habit is by slowly teaching your brain to relax in such incidents by learning more about the thing that frightens you and what it really is.

I'm not even scared of alligators I think they're pretty cool tbh

Of course I wouldn't want to stand in front of one, but that's just common sense

So I don't understand why I still have so many dreams with them since it was such a brief encounter, unless if it made me very anxious afterwards and it's been so long I've just forgotten

Its most likely going to stay so since it happened on such an unfortunate time but its good you dont fear it anymore.

maybe you should train yourself on doing lucid dreaming then, that might be an option

I mean I've got the reserve of that sort of? Like a few times I've nearly drowned and yea it aint scarred me but fuck it was scary and I feared my life since I was like 9 (I was a brave boy) but I've only had three dreams where I've drowned I tihnk????? And I've never fallen or nothing but I gotta fear of heights and I usually end up falling in my dreams. Sometimes from a low height sometimes from a "You are dead before you hit the ground" height

I was attacked by a German Shepherd when I was a kid. It was a neighbors dog and we went over to meet them. The dog was HUGE! I was scared and and I ran home. It chased me the whole way. I've been scared of German Shepherds ever since. I can't even watch them on TV.
