Pie has a crust around the edge and a filling inside(usually round), and cake is fluffy and is usually topped with a form of icing (usually rectangular, but can be roundish too..)

I understand. Here in germay we just differ into lets say... Torte and cake.

It means Torte (Hope you know this word, maybe from spanish or french) are very big cakes, usually for weddings. Usually more cakes piled up :D
And cake is just everything else.
