Birthday Pic for Iddstar by Ross-Sanger Birthday Pic for Iddstar by Ross-Sanger
Birthday gift for Vic Hill A.K.A. Iddstar. She writes and draws a webcomic called Button Press but she'd not been updating for a while because of her heavy workload. I hope she takes the day off for her birthday at least.

In the pic are Vic's characters Alf, Eric, Jess and the star character Steve, Vic's there in the stripy hat.

I guess I could have messaged you here too but I thought you were more likely to pick up the email... oh, but it might be an old email, you still use the one that refers to a band of overweight cloister-dwellers, right?

Thanks :D

I did check it this week, but it must have been longer ago than I thought! I'm sooo majorly behind with everything. Got some serious organising of life to do right now methinks...

I know the feeling... good luck with that ;)

I had thought about making this like a guest comic actually... but now it's about a week too late for the occasion.
Well, Happy nearly-a-week-after-your birthday. Did you get up to much?

I know she's busy, I didn't think she was too busy to miss her own birthday though :XD: I also asked Jemma to poke her some hopefully she'll see it at some point.

Heheh, yeah, I think Vic actually made a shirt with that caption on it on cafépress I think.

Anyway, thanks :) I hope she does like it, I haven't heard back from her yet.

Thankyou :D Yeah, Steve is da man, with his awesomehair :XD:

Well I kind of have a method for that: I do a rough sketch of the characters and try to get them where I want them, but then I trace them neatly onto layout paper (which is thin enough to see the darker lines but the ink doesn't smudge on it like tracing paper) -- that way I can change the position of anyone who seems to be in the wrong place by moving the paper underneath and tracing where I want the character to be, and generally adjust the scene and make it neater, then I ink it, wait a minute for the ink to totally set then rub out the pencil lines and scan it into Paint Shop Pro, then I turn the lines into a mask layer, adjust any bits that still look a bit wrong and then colour on the layer behind the lines (so I can have smooth lines but still block-fill) and voilà!

I also sometimes put different characters onto different layers for scenes where I'm not sure where I want each character until I start putting text in or something, it really helps having a layer-based program like Gimp or getpaint.net or Paint Shop Pro, but for this one I drew it all as one picture.

i love his hair! hehe its so funky! well, you do a lot more work than i do, i would get so angry and give up, the only pic i spent a lot of time on was the "flight of the titans" and it looks no differnt than any of my other work, lol!!!

ohhh see there, LAYERS. i dont have them and dont want them, really. I like one, it makes me feel special that i only use one XD!!!! >.> or just "not up with the times" but i dont mind that!

Yes indeed. It's also gotten progressively larger as the comic has gone on.
What can I say, I enjoy drawing :) I don't think I'd get by without a scanner though.
The one with the lightning? I thought that looked pretty good... I get what you mean though.

I used to use only one layer but I think the last thing I did all one layer was probably this: [link]

I just like the flexibility that using several layers gives me. It also means I can add different things on different layers to see what they look like (like shading, lighting, etc.) or have the background separate so it's easier to draw in the shadows or some background objects. Also, in comics it means you can draw a background once, then use it in several frames, then you only have to change where the characters and it saves time, and if you've got a lot of characters in one picture it makes it SO much easier to draw them all seperately and then move them around afterwards, like in this picture: [link] each character is on a different layer, the bonfire is on a layer of its own and the background is on three different layers (hedge, sky and fireworks), it would have been a lot harder to do it all on one layer...

But if you like drawing all one one layer, then that's the way that suits you and that's totally fine

Thanks :) I hope so.

There's a slight joke here too in that no one knows what Alf is studying, so I thought maybe he was in training as a chef... but then again, it could just be his hobby.

You'd probably enjoy the comic, do check it out if you get time
