Taking the total and multiplying by 2, I am 52% girly. Neato.

Regina Spektor is an artist I have favored for quite a while. Her airy voice and cheerful, songbird vibrato are key elements in most of her songs, and add to the different measure of anti-folk her mezzo soprano range covers. Anti-folk, by a rough definition, focuses more on the experimental ability of the musician, and tends to be lax in regards to time signatures and keys. Drawing many comparisons to Norah Jones and Kate Nash, Spektor uses lyricism and imagery to capture moments of innocence that dwell in Americana fairy tales. She is also widely known for the theme song of the Netflix TV series, Orange is the New Black

Regina Spektor was born in Moscow, Soviet Union in the year 1980; her family is of Russian- Jewish decent, though gaining refugee status in 1989 to escape anti-semitic persecution. Her time in Moscow was crucial to her musical development, however, because she has recalled many days when she would trade Beatles and Queen cassettes with her friends, while learning how to play her grandmother's old piano in their home. Spektor began to live in the United States with her family at a mere ten years of age. She was raised in the Bronx, and studied piano in the Manhattan School of Music until she was seventeen. A few years later, classically trained Regina graduated with an undergraduate degree from SUNY Purchase in 2001. Regina has released seven albums, the most recent being Remember Us to Life, which was dropped late July 2016. Of her 2009 album Far I chose to review my personal favorite track, Folding Chair.

The track opens with optimistic imagery, claiming the narrator's feet are "....buried in the sand/and there's a breeze." The narrator in the song is coaxing her lover to open up their folding chair and share a close range of happiness. It seems Spektor wants us to believe the singer in this piece has formed a new confidence in herself, but might not be ready to open it up to the rest of the world; the next few lyrics support this notion when she sings, " There's a shadow, you can't see my eyes/And the sea is just a wetter version of the skies." In this sense, both characters in the song are unwilling to take the next step and trust each other; I relate this to Sakura Haruno from Naruto, because she has a tendency of displaying a warm, brash exterior to those around her, yet is almost as equally untrusting as anyone from the series.

This song is complete with uncertainty, but Spektor makes a point to make sure her main character is sure every person is perfect in their own unique way, claiming, "I've got a perfect body/but sometimes I forget./ I've got a perfect body/ 'cause my eyelashes catch my sweat." What the narrator in Spektor's song belts out is an homage to any young girl who has ever felt insecure in light of other people; Sakura, like many of us, has felt inferior to her friends on many occasions. However, we always see this young woman get up and keep going. Though some may claim she is a bit lack luster, and can be rather static sometimes, it is inevitable that the few self-empowerment scenes she did have were worth noting.

Finally, Sakura's personality can be noted in the last verse. When Spektor's character sings, "Maybe one day you will understand/
I don't want nothing from you but to sweetly hold your hand./ 'Till that day just please don't be so down/ don't make frowns, you silly clown," we can imagine Sakura's intent on keeping her two best friends, Sasuke and Naruto, away from harm's way. Sakura has willingly let her self fight off disaster in the wake of what it may mean for her platonic relationships. She has many times tried to encourage and uplift her friends, even if they do not care for it at the moment, or may not even be expecting it (for example, when she visits Lee in the hospital as well as Sasuke in the first series.) Outside of the Naruto series, Regina's character is actively trying to save her friend from the horrors of the real world, and rather invites them to make merry and have a happy life together, which cannot be done in solitude.

Thanks for reading, and please let me know how you feel! I will be more than happy to take suggestions. Below is a link to Regina Spektor's website, for I do not claim any rights to her work or her label. I am also providing a link to the song I have briefly critiqued!

Stay beautiful,

Isa

Hey all!

I want to thank all of my new followers, you're all wonderful.

I'm thinking of writing song critiques, if anybody wants to suggest anything? I am currently drowning in midterm work, but I feel like this is pretty important.

Also, i might be flipping around soundcloud in a few months to write small tunes using music software. BUT all that is going to have to wait until at least December. Thanks college for putting a damper on my Wednesday.

Anyway, I'm going to try and critique at least one song a week. For all them Naruto fans out there, I might even throw in a little info about why a particular song may remind me of a character or two (or even their relationship to another character.)

Stay beautiful, and have my song of the week.

To all those that look at my deviations, hello! I probably will not be very active, as I am a student and therefore my priorities lie in staying ahead of my field. Please send me a note to talk! I have not used DeviantArt in several years, so I will just og by my own assumptions that the community may have changed a bit while I was gone; however, I will learn.

Cheers,

Isa
