It was a sunny day in the fields of Heaven. Skittles the Fox Terrier was playing with her best friends Scout and Sidney. They'd take turns chasing and tackling each other. Scarlett, Sage and Charlie were sitting together by a stream just watching them play and laughing about "young ones".

This was how the six friends went about the most of their days; simply passing the time until their beloved family joined them in Heaven. Skittles, who was the latest to join them, was delighted to find herself completely revived. She was able to run again - she was able to play like she used to. Charlie and Scarlett had been completely renewed too. And Scarlett was happy to see that she had not only recovered her eyesight, but she could now see in color.

Skittles barked once to get Scout to chase her before she realized that none of the dogs were moving. She cocked her head to the side, wondering what they were looking at before she noticed. She was nearly blinded by the light, but she was unafraid. All of the animals in Heaven felt comfort when He came by.

One by one, each dog lowered themselves to an elegant bow before He called out. "As you were, my dearest animal friends. I need to speak with Skittles."

Skittles blinked nervously before Sage nudged her in the side. Skittles trotted towards Him and whispered once she was near, "What's the matter, my King?"

"Do not worry." He said with a warm smile. "Your family is just as healthy as they were the day you left them. I only called you because I have an assignment for you."

"For me?" she asked, surprised that he would choose her, but already resolving to do the best she could.

He nodded and crouched down so that He was more at her level. She hadn't noticed at first that he had been carrying something, but she was surprised to see what it was.

"A puppy!" she gasped, "But Sir!! I was fixed a long time ago!"

God laughed, His booming laugh felt as though it caused the whole world to laugh along with Him. He smiled at Skittles, "No, Skittles, this puppy isn't for you... it's for your family."

"My... my family!?" Skittles gasped as she saw the little puppy squirming in God's arms. "But... how will she know where she can sit and where she can't?? How will she know when to let them know she has to go piddle? How will she know how to act when the girls' friends come over? How will she know to lie in dad's office when he's working? Who's going to teach her how to walk with mom? How to chase rabbits? How to tease Grandma's dog? How to whine when the girls leave for school? My family can't have just any dog!"

"I know that." God said with another smile. "And that's why I'm leaving her with you for the time being. Take good care of her, Skittles. You know your family better than anyone else. Show her the way."

With that, He laid the little puppy at Skittles' feet and stood back up. Skittles watched as the little puppy struggled to her feet and staggered a few steps before toppling over.

"She's due around the first part of next month. Your family will be expecting her next year - teach her all you can."

"I will." Skittles said with a determined smile. "You can count on me."

--------

This took me like... two days to color o____O;; The picture of Skittles has been drawn for a long time now - I just added the puppy and colored it ^^ It was originally titled "On Her Way Home".... which could actually still work for both of them :3

I was meaning to finish it over break and I got the idea of adding in the puppy somehow... then I realized that an unborn puppy would be in heaven with all of the lost puppies, maybe they could meet that way! Therefore, we have Skittles proudly strolling through the clouds with a little puppy bouncing along at her heels trying to be just like she is. The puppy isn't named yet, BTW - we're still thinking.

I LOVE FOX TERRIERS!!!!!111eleventy (the puppy is darker - normally their markings super-fade as they get older. Skittles was nearly all white/grey when she passed away)

I used refs for everything, of course. I used pictures I had taken of Skittles, pictures of puppies from Google and a picture for the background from Google. It's kind of hard to see because I shrunk it down so much, but I'm really proud of how "real" the dogs look... to me at least xD I'm not much of a "realistic" artist and nearly all of my stuff is super cartoony... but I like the way their furs turn out :D

Skittles is sporting her cowboy collar (that she left with us) and my favorite bandana of hers.

About the story - I know it's not the best, but I started crying while writing it x) Scout was our next door neighbor's spaniel, Scarlett was my aunt's Shi-Tsu, Charlie was my grandparent's cocker spaniel, Sage was my other grandparent's schnauzer, and Sidney was my other aunt's.... chow-mix mutt x) I figure they're all happy to see each other again - especially Skittles with Sage, Scout, and Sidney x) (it is completely random that nearly all of their names start with S, BTW ^^; ) And yes, I think animals can converse with God - even if they can't talk to us. And yes, I also believe animals go to heaven too. (you all saw the movie about that, right? All Dogs go to Heaven!?! xD)

That's all :) I needed a new Featured Deviation anyways. (kudos if you read any/all of that)

EDIT 7/2/06: I've changed the randompuppy so that it is now Libby :) She even has a red, white and blue starry bandana! Yay for my puppies!

This is simply amazing, both the story and the picture. (And I totally agree about the animals conversing. I've never understood those who believe animals have no souls; how could one look into those eyes and think such a thing?)

Anyway. I love those details in the fur, and the bandannas. The entire thing is just brimming with beauty and personality.

So, this may seem completely random, two years after my last comment. And honestly, I hope you get this.
My faithful wired haired fox terrier, Torry, passed away the day after this past Thanksgiving. I came home from an out of state school, and she was her happy peppy loving self. We spent thanksgiving at a relatives a few states away when the "pet hotel" she was staying at called to let us know she was rushed to the animal hospital. We drove through the night to be with the beloved member of the family. Torry's vet and caretaker both called us frequently to let us know how she was doing. Within a six hour time frame her health took a nose dive, having to get three blood transfusions just to keep her alive long enough for us to say good bye. She was going to bleed to death. When we finally arrived at the animal hospital the doctor brought her into a room and placed her on the table. My sister and I couldn't help but cry about the inevitable fate of our best friend. We decided it would be best to put her down, otherwise her passing would be extremely painful. I knew it was for the best, but it still hurt all the same. I decided I couldn't be in the room as she passed away, so I was left alone to say my final good bye to my best friend whom I had known since she was born. As I was leaving the room, leaving my "little puppy" forever, thoughts of your story came flooding back to me. In fact, that night I went to my room and reread it. I know she's in a much better place, and hopefully she too is training our new puppy (we get her in April) to be just like her. She had a good life, living for fifteen years.
I didn't mean for this comment to be so long. I just wanted you to know your story touched me, and has stayed with me for two years, even through the passing of my loving wired haired fox terrier. Really, I just want to say Thank You.

This is a wonderfull picture with a wonderfull story Rose, and it really makes me think, about abortion actualy. WHat happens to the child getting ready for the world when the parent selfishly decides against it? It has a lot of thought put into it and I love that, you dont always see that these days, especialy with the soft christian feal, insta fave!

I know what you mean... Its really not fair, even if you dont want the child, there are couples who cant have one, and by getting an abortion, its like killing their chance at have a baby of their own...

^^ Rose, this really got me to remembering my old Chow who died sadly to a heart attack.

The story really reminded me of her too, as well as the picture. The picture's great. Even better, the picture also reminds me of my Chow and my old German Sheperd. :3 The story really made me feel happy. ^^

I'm so putting this in my favorites, and thanks for the memories of my old dogs that came to me while reading this. ^^
