OMG LOOK AT ME IM SO CLEVER MAKING A CAPTAIN N JOKE WITH SIMON PIT AND MEGA MAN ALL BEING IN SMASH! NO ONE ELSE HAS EVER MADE THIS JOKE EVER!
But yeah, I was excited pretty much as soon as I saw confirmation of Simon being in Ultimate. Some might argue the accidentally-leaked music confirmed him, but I prefer confirmation to speculation around leaks. His trailer looked stunning, his moves look really awesome and I'm interested in seeing how they work, and "Vampire Killer" is one of the most-badass remixes I've heard in Smash. :w00t: Overall, at this point, Simon's tied with Ridley for my most-anticipated Newcomer.
The first thing I thought of, as many other people did when they saw him, was Pit, Mega Man, and Simon previously teaming up in Captain N: The Game Master. I never watched the show, since that show ended 5 years before I was born, but I watched the Nostalgia Critic review it, so that's kind of the same thing...ish. From what I understand, the show didn't do an accurate job representing the characters. Pit was the closest, being a cupid, though they called him "Kid Icarus" (from what I've heard, it was so people would know the name of the game, though it could just be a "Captain Marvel =/= Shazam" thing) and gave him an annoying speech impedimenticus. Mega Man had an annoying voice and, for some reason, was green (I've also read that one of the coloring artists didn't have a color-corrected TV, which made him look green). And Simon, I would argue, has it the worst. Rather than looking like Conan the Barbarian, he instead looks like a pilot with a puffy jacket and goggles, as well as a huge chin, and his personality seemed very opposed to how he acted in his games. I suppose you could argue that the characters didn't have much personality in their games at first, but turning a vampire hunter from 1691 into a bumbling oaf was probably not the way to go.
Since Pit, Mega Man, and Simon are all in Ultimate together, I wanted to make a drawing of the three of them together, basically since the Direct. The most obvious thing I thought of was having them address the fact that they actually have game-accurate designs (though Pit's design has evolved significantly since his first game). It made the most sense for Simon to notice the differences, since he's new to the series and hasn't seen either of them in a long time, while Pit and Mega Man met back up in 2014. And of course, Pit has to notice Simon actually looks like himself. And now that they're all together, it's time for them to fight evil once again! And maybe each other, if the game demands them to.

Pit (c) Nintendo
Mega Man (c) Capcom
Simon (c) Konami

Also, as someone who hated the Twilight series in middle school, I have no qualms with a vampire killer or two being in Smash.

For all Captain N's faults - and they are many - the writing is no worse than any of the other shows at the time; it's no worse than some of the writing you got in some of the later episodes of The Real Ghostbusters, and it's certainly no worse than the writing you were getting on Super Mario Bros., or a bit while later, The Legend of Zelda; it was standard 1980's kids fare: there was slapstick physical humour, there were montages with songs (Real Ghostbusters had those all over the place, and so did ThunderCats; it was a thing), and unnecessary moralising, because knowing is half the battle, learning and growing, all that jazz.
