New month already, eh? Never even got to uploading stock, too busy with other stuffs / uploading images on my main account. Need to get more images up. Also been contemplating putting some photos into packs, what do you think about that? Do you prefer singles or packs, or does it depend on the subject matter/photos in question? If I get around to it, I'll probably clean the gallery up a bit, too. Anyway, onto the feature.

There's definitely growth and maturity in this artist's work from the earlier November deviation. Characters fit better into their scenes, which have more storytelling aspects than before. Lighting and atmosphere have improved, making everything look smoother and more interesting.

Would do you think? Have anything to say or suggest?

I love the color of the first image--I only wish there was a little more head room for this guy. The second deviation has an interesting look to it, with its unique setting and teal colorcast. The eyes and mane/forelock are nice, though the purpose and origin of the glow is a little unclear to me. I like the placement of the horse in the third piece. Not sure that the border is necessary, though, and I think the mane/tail could be a little less yellow and a little less defined (more blurred to match the horse).

Overall, these manipulations work most successfully in establishing a scene than others within Soppinaro's gallery. Where the perspective seems confused in other works, these deviations are closer to creating a clear character and setting. Mane and tails are also drawn better in the first two deviations, with the third just seeming a little stiff and lacking a little depth.

Would do you think? Have anything to say or suggest?

A small gallery, as of yet, but veturdrengur is still rather new to dA (welcome, btw). Claimed an aspiring equine artist, and I do see potential. So here's to you!

The first deviation has a nice use of lighting--even if it isn't 100% accurate--as it lends a dramatic quality and draws the eye. The composition, the abstract background, and the limited color palette are all working quite successfully here. The artwork of the second thumbnail seems a bit off on the lighting, but the color of everything blends nicely and the perspective is interesting.

The third piece is laid out nicely and offers a good attempt at communicating story and emotion through pose and props. The atmosphere created in the forth piece through color and lighting is wonderful, though again the lighting here (mainly the horse's shadows) seem a bit off.

Overall, these pieces are successful in placing the subject(s) in new settings. Lighting is difficult, but it isn't far off in these works.

(Ladyhawke 12 - trot for The Black Horse)

My favorites from her gallery, below. ;D
The Serpent Horse is really quite interesting with its intricate lines and subtle details; it easily stood out to me when I first browsed through her gallery. Love the Akhal Teke's shading in Gust of the Wind. The background isn't quite up to par (oh laziness), but the colors are at least a nice, supportive match to the horse. The thumbnail for Cave definitely catches the eye, with the painting's vivid colors and sharp lighting, while also maintaining depth through its suggested atmosphere. (And no, I really don't think the nude ought to be added--though maybe that's just me). The last two portrait drawings stand above the rest in her gallery, for I think she has strength in drawing people in this view.

(High desert butte 1 in god's will)

One of the first uses of my stock. When I first visited this deviant's gallery, I didn't find a collection of photomanipulations, as one might have expected, but of photography (and very nice photography at that). The gallery has a very clean and modern feel to it--sometimes feeling vibrant, sometimes feeling thoughtful, searching, or sad. Overall, the collection has a rather timeless quality (time lapse seems to have that effect) and is professional and appealing.

As seems to be common at times with features, I had trouble selecting only a few photos to post here and really do recommend you browse his gallery. In the way of views/favs, his work is rather under-appreciated imho and should get much more attention.

Challenge!
Use any one of the three photos currently featured (displayed over there < underneath my newest deviations). All artwork will be featured here in the journal. Featured photos will be switched out on a monthly basis, with the current photos appearing for a little over a month. Future features may also include a theme or may become more of a competition, rewards included, as that would be the best way to make anything of this featured photo challenge business (if the only way). Though sometimes a little challenge or dare is enough to spark some sort of urge or creativity, so I decided to post 'em anyway.

Artist Feature
So for those that have used my photos, it's been interesting to see what photos get used and how they're used or included in your work. I find myself often browsing your galleries, and lately I've got to thinking, why not feature this other work in addition to the artwork made with my photos? So I do believe I shall be selecting one of you artists to feature here in my journal, perhaps on a monthly basis. Just, you know, because.

PHOTO LIST
- Valley of Fire [ completed ] This set is pretty much done. I may upload a few more, but overall, what's there is there.
[ Behind the Photos ] The photos are really a set of drive-by snaps. We didn't take much time there at all, but it was just a quick along-the-way stop. I would love to go back, but I think not in the summer, unless that's what I have to work with. The whole place is really appealing to the eye. The first sight of the valley had everybody in the car literally exclaiming, "Whoa." The creamy orange to red color of the rock really pops among the surroundings, a desolate, brown middle of nowhere. And the weathered, chipped surface of the rocks, paired with that occasional dark patina, makes everything very textured and full of character--not to mention the fact that the area is steeped in history.
- Cove Fort [ completed ]
[ Behind the Photos ] This was another along-the-way stop that we thought looked interesting, but we didn't quite know what we were in for. They give a rather extensive tour that covers who built it, why, and the overall lifestyle. It was both interesting and, in my opinion, a tad awkward due to religious undertones. I really didn't mind it too much, but it made my henna-stained hands seem so... loud. But no, the tour touched on a lot of the specific day-to-day things that don't always come to mind (like, say, what they made toothbrushes out of in the 1800s), and was pretty interesting.
- Birds  [ completed ]
[ Behind the Photos ] Not much to say, really. Most will be of geese and ducks that were out and about in a park. I may also upload some shots of eagles and other various birds that I've managed to snap photos of at different times and places. EDIT: Yup. Some eagle shots. And that's it, for now, on bird photos.
- Deer  [ completed ]
[ Behind the Photos ] A few more photos from Tuolumne Meadows of a herd we saw on the way to Yosemite. Wish I had gotten a nice photo of that setting. It was quite beautiful; so fresh and clear. The photos of Tioga Lake fav.me/d4cdrdp are from the same morning. The wildlife observatory photos are another quick pullover which was more to stretch our legs than anything else. There just happened to be two deer grazing next to the pond full of ducks. The last set of photos will be of a herd that we stopped for so that they could cross the road. Shows off how well they blend into the environment. I also uploaded two photos of a pronghorn herd that again, just happened to be out while we were driving by. So basically, everything is shot from or right off of a road!
- Grassy Fields [ in process ]
[ Behind the Photos ] Poppies were out and blooming (though they are closed in these shots) as well as several other wildflowers. It was a very windy and rather cold evening, though it doesn't look so in the photos. We spent quite some time out there, and the sunset was really wonderful. I love how rich those warm tones came out.
[ to come ] - Beach/Seaside - Lava Rock Formations/Tablelands - Petroglyphs - Snowscapes

THE PLAN...
...to upload 5-10 a day, time permitting. This isn't my highest priority, but I feel strangely productive about uploading here. Could be simply because it gives me the sense of a larger purpose and reason for sifting through and organizing my photos. I can be much more objective when I'm not working solely for myself, whether or not the photos here are truly helpful. Though the more they are, the better I feel about everything, of course.

So, stay tuned for more I suppose.
Also, I make all these edits minor, so check back for updates if you are at all interested!

For any who read what I had here previously, I decided that the phoenix/dragon shaped 'R' would probably look too much with the rest of my name. Plus I tried it and really wasn't coming up with anything I really liked. I may come back to the idea (there's a part of me that still likes it) though the result would probably be used in some other way than I originally intended.

In the meantime, slightly new theme to the credit bar beneath the photos and my devID section. I will likely continue to work on my TOU, too. Make it more concise.

And for now that is all. Will upload photos more regularly now that I'm somewhat happy with the new look. Feel free to give feedback though. I do, at times, wonder if it is too much. But it is what it is, for now!

The old gallery is still getting over here and new photos are yet to come (with almost 200 already in the gallery, ha). Planning on uploading about 10 photos a day me thinks. I've been spending so much time over here that I seriously feel my main account is lacking. Guess I'll have to work on that. Looking through my photos has been fun though. Reminds me of where I've been and what I've seen, and makes me more eager to get out and take more photos.

Anywho, two deviations were made this week with my stock: Son of Rage by ~AirborneTaxi, making use of some sexy grass, and MYST15 by ~thetautoutrain, with Ladyhawke. Both of which are likely displayed over to the left there, seeing as the gallery is still yet small.
**Update** Two more deviations! where echos come to rest by ~Sarabearasaurus and a WIP, Wake of a Goddess, by ~DeatH-OF-InnocencE. Both make use of rock stock (sounds funny )! Pretty awesome.

Debating on whether or not to review artwork made with my stock. Maybe for those that are interested?
