Linux MInt 10 Desktop

So here we are a year later running Linux. This is my final flavour for now, pending my move to Mint 13 with Cinnamon when it gets released.

I was chastised the last time I posted a screenshot and told that the site isn't a forum for comments on interfaces.

Interfaces and the way we tailor them to our will are an art form.

As such I won't be humouring any such comments in the future which is my tongue-in-cheek way of saying to the thought police that if you don't like my comments then don't read them.

And on that note:

Unity on Ubuntu has proven to Absolutely Stink, especially for visually impaired users.

Gnome3 in it's original form is not far behind - the Brave New World is a convoluted morass of rubbish.

This is a Gnome2 desktop.

That being said, I'm happy to say that Clem Lefebvre et. al. of the Mint dev team have wrested victory from the jaws of defeat as far as Gnome3 is concerned with Cinnamon. It's still rough-edged (for example customization is manual and not via a GUI) but developement moves forward and I've actually managed to build a Mint 12 desktop with Cinnamon that bears a striking resemblance to this one with all the usability that implies. There is even a Compiz-like enhanced desktop zoom for us visually impaired users courtesy of Tobias Quinn.

Now, the details:

OS: Mint 10 x64
Theme: Dust Cold
Icon Set: LaGaDesk-BlackWhite-III
Taskbar Applet Manager: DockbarX
Dock: GLX-Dock (Cairo Dock)
Wallpaper: Bright Moon

Dock background and Taskbar colouration are custom done by me.

This is place to post screenshots, not the place to criticize desktop environments you don't like. Do you see anyone posting shots of their favorite desktops and then writing an essay in the comments about all those "other" desktops that "stink"? Complaining about things you don't even use and need not subject yourself to...well, that's rather childish.

Used the others, hated 'em, discarded 'em. It should me noted that I'm certainly not alone in my view.

Also, did you miss the part in the "essay" where I said rather clearly that "I don't care" regarding those who didn't like what I wrote about the other interfaces and that they didn't have to read it if they didn't?

Moving right along...
