Jazz Icons - Sophisticated Giant
Jazz Icons: Dexter Gordon

This is the first in a series of desktop wallpapers of giants of jazz, in particular artists I enjoy greatly. Dexter Gordon, AKA the Sophisticated Giant because of his immense height, was a saxophone player who worked with, among other artists, the great Lionel Hampton before launching a solo career.

The wallpapers are all going to be 2560x1600 and minimalistic / somewhat surreal.  I abhor a cluttered desktop and wallpaper that you lose your icons and widgets in, so all of them are going to be relatively clean in design.

I hope you enjoy them.

Jazz Icons - The Divine One
Jazz Icons: Sarah Vaughan

My other favourite jazz female vocalist, the silky and Sassy (her initial nickname before she was dubbed The Divine One) Sarah Vaughan.

2560x1600 and minimalistic / somewhat surreal for the icon fanatics or those who just prefer a clean desktop.

Enjoy!

Jazz Icons - The First Lady Of Song
Jazz Icons: Ella Fitzgerald

One Cannot Forget The Ladies.  This is my favourite jazz female vocalist and the lady's voice is absolutely iconic, smooth yet throaty and a gift that caresses the ear.  She is indeed The First Lady Of Song and her Songbooks collection is exquisite.

2560x1600 and minimalistic / somewhat surreal for the icon fanatics or those who just prefer a clean desktop.

Enjoy!

Jazz Icons - 'Hank'
Jazz Icons: Hank Mobley

Smooth.  That's all I need to say: smooth.  The Middleweight Champion Of The Tenor Sax.

2560x1600 and minimalistic / somewhat surreal for the icon fanatics or those who just prefer a clean desktop.

Enjoy!

Jazz Icons - The High Priest Of Bebop
Jazz Icons: Thelonious Monk

Monk, The High Priest Of Bebop, that genre of jazz that allows individual artists to cut loose with their own muse, or as it should be more convivially known, their own personal brand of genius / insanity.

2560x1600 and minimalistic / somewhat surreal for the icon fanatics or those who just prefer a clean desktop.

Enjoy!

Free speech is not alive and well in the world today. There are countries which like to lie to themselves that it is, claiming that it is enshrined in their Constitution but it is a farce.

Consider this:

A group of people have a certain set of ideals.  Those ideals are morally repressive and would limit the rights of a category of individuals.  How to advance that cause?  Well, as it turns out, it's painfully simple.

The first step is to masquerade the viewpoint under the cloak of so-called "free speech".  The group almost always takes the position that they have the right to air this odious viewpoint, no matter how atrocious, under the guise of right to free speech  Then they coerce politicians and corporations to espouse the viewpoint using the bribe of "enlightened self interest" which of course is a useful euphemism for selfish gain.  The method used is "you'll get elected if... " or "you get more profits if... " and so the story goes.  Before you know it, special interest lobbies and corporate sponsors are backing the group and it's all legal because after all, "we have the right to free speech".  The campaign runs its course and now we have politicians and corporate sponsors in place who are controlled by the group and what do you think happens next?

Laws get passed to limit the rights and freedoms of the category of individuals targeted by the groups, and somehow they become "less equal" in the sight of the law because of it.

The cycle has repeated itself across history and is now in full cry again in the United States.  A company has come out against gay marriage and the slithering schemers who would rob a group of individuals of their rights are clamouring that the company has a right to its viewpoint because of the right to free speech.

Free speech can be abused and has been throughout history.  I wonder if the message would still be palatable if it were openly from the Klu Klux Klan or perhaps a group of Nazis.

As I recall, another couple of groups of people were denied their rights in the last century using the same tactic.  Thankfully, saner heads prevailed and black people and women are no longer denied their rights using those ploys and excuses.

So how does this apply to art?

Well, again it's painfully simple:

The same groups who would practice repression based on so-called "morality" (which incidentally is bought and paid for from age to age and is certainly NOT a constant) will also be the first to pass laws on what is considered acceptable or obscene, thus limiting artistic license.  That will lead to a little thing called "censorship" which of course never EVER happens here on deviantArt or anywhere else.

The sad thing?  The Founding Fathers (who were certainly NOT stupid people) saw all of this coming and wrote about it, warning their inheritors not to be fooled.  Read Thomas Jefferson.

True to form, no one listened.

Remember this the next time some "moralist" comes pandering their snake oil under the cloak of "free speech".

Hello, random watcher here...

One thing I properly enjoy about your DA profile is how relatable are some of your journal entries (especially that one on free speech)...

Anyway, how was your life going since then? :)

Sorry for replying so much later.  I actually didn't check to see if anyone noticed.

Life is good.  I see some decidedly unusual things happening south of the border in the States (I live in Canada) with the apparrent rise of Donald Trump.  This for me has all the hallmarks of the rise of another propaganda genius, noted for stirring the easily manipulated masses - one Adolph Hitler.  The fact that an opportunist of this sort could conceivably be put in charge of one of the world's largest nuclear arsenals should give anyone pause.

Santayana applies here: those who do not learn from history are condemned to repeat it.  Unfortunately, I do not believe the world can afford another such lesson.

Really late reply, hope you don't mind...

Santayana applies here: those who do not learn from history are condemned to repeat it.  Unfortunately, I do not believe the world can afford another such lesson.

Not a truer word is said. However, I beg to differ on the "world cannot possibly recover from it again" (if I interpreted it right, sleep deprivation is of really no help to me, especially during this time of the year)...

Here's how I always viewed it: Unlike what Faux News & Co. is striving to pander to the masses, our world is always evolving for the better. While it is true that we have seen far better times, there are still numerous, discrete, independent yet effective individual actions out there that makes it so we're always achieving a positive evolution no matter what or when. Making the best out of things, y'know :)

So yeah, this might sound like some hippie dribble to the average Joe, but that's what keeps me going personnally (although given the overall context, it's easier said than done)
