This chapter is mostly done by Luke's voice since I made this as a beta version first to see if his voice would work for a review thing like this.
It might be a little out of character for his persona to be put in this role, but whatever. His voice is too awesome.

This will probably be a more controversial chapter , as I'll be tackling my least favorite game, as far as story's concerned: Colors.
Yes, the gameplay is great.
Yes, it doesn't have an overload of characters anymore. Yes, it doesn't have over the top melo drama anymore. Yes, it doesn't have a generic new villain anymore.
But what DOES it DO have? Well, pretty much nothing.

Sonic Colors' story is conflicted on what it wanted to be but the pay off is inevitably a lame comedy. Like you said the main problem is bringing something up that only amounts to pointless filler in the pay off. "it had good potential" could easily sum up the stories in recent games.

Yeah, Potnac and Graff are great in coming up with interesting ideas for stories, but they never seem to become more then ideas that show up in one scene, flash a brief moment of potential and then evaporate.

Yeah that's true I'd thought that they'd iron that over in Colors so then honed their skills with Lost World. Generations didn't have much to warrant except for a vapid story with nothing of note but Sonic Lost World had the same problems I had with Colors full force.

I UNDERSTAND IT ALL

I think that the main reason why you can't enjoy this game is that it treats it's players as uneducated morons and that kids are too dumb to remember even the simplest of important plot points, so they repeat it over and over and over and over like a toy hammer hitting you on your head. Which it ends up losing whatever impact they wanted to happen at the story's climax.

In Japan, the way they do story telling is that they do a lot of exposition dumping through characters talking than having the exposition being show through events that are actively taking place and not slowing the story down to a stand still.
But there are people from western countries that are prone to abuse exposition when it suits their needs.

In Colors case, it's got good visuals (even though it's a bit too much at times X.x ) game play that works without being frustrating, but it still has it's issues, but sadly it lacks a proper story. A story that makes you want to replay the game over and over rather than just play it once, then put it up on the self to collect dust.

That's the problem with modern games and kids shows, there's a cushion around everything and there's no consequences. But kids are not idiots! Heck, I watched Digimon when I was a kid and I was able to sympathize with characters because there was actually drama going on even though I didn't completely understand the story until I got much older. Kids know emotion, drama, and consequences when they see them.

I played Sonic Colors and quite honestly I only finished it for the sake of finishing it, I didn't care about the story.

Sonic and his friends are in an area where they can be put in dangerous situations and come out okay. Of course, Sonic is a kid's genre so you have to work in the limits of a kids genre. At the same time, let the characters go beyond a comfort zone and grow up as the story goes.

Heh, for that, Nintendo is the king of over exposition.
GHah, Zelda skyward sword.

I agree with you on that. I like Zelda, but the hand holding can be quite annoying at times. But that doesn't mean it makes the games bad.

Though if the hand holding is done way too much, then the player will get alienated by it.
It's a very fine line of giving instruction and telling story elements to the player versus the player being treated like they're two years old and that they need to reminded of what's going on all the time.

Good explanation of game's game play and story over having you be hand held for everything in the game. No one likes to be treated like a small child.

Jup.
It's why I don't really like palying a Zelda game, unless i have a huge chunk of time. It takes 2 hours for the game to get going. Ghah.

Tough this series is not really about gameplay, nor is there any real focus on whether it's a "good"or a "bad" game.
I just want to explore story elements mostly.

No problem, can't wait to see more ^^

I will say personally I liked the story in Shadow and 06, they were great imo, saying this I tend to like dark plots, but I agree with most of what you said, also as much as I agree about what you said the bad story in Sonic Colors and I respect how much you hated it over the others, I still prefer it over Sonic Heroes and FUCKING SONIC UNLEASHED!! God I so hate that game with passion, it's everything I hate about Sonic in one pack, wish to see you bash it more tbh but nah you keep doing what you do, great stuff
