“Sorrow Within” is painting about many little things that happen when you’re sad… (Please look at the painting first and figure it out for yourself I like what people bring out of my paintings at times )
As you see two masks are on top of each other the one that is happy is on top of the sad or depressed mask. At times in our lives we attempt to always show our good side even though inside we are actually sad. It is an act to keep people from accepting us at times… and act that can lead us to more sadness if not controlled.
I think everyone can agree that in some occasion in their lives they have felt sad but decided to do an act of being happy instead. For example having a job you hate, But you have to be happy because you need to give a good impression of yourself with your co workers or customers. The tears are an obvious representation of sadness also but if you see the tears go down into a sink (hehe the kitchen sink). Some tears we shed go down the “drain”, because some tears are useless and are tears of sadness inside yourself instead of what other have done thus some tears shed go down the drain and are useless… crying for events that do not matter in all reality small things in your life, Like crying over a broken dish or along those lines. The Light is hanging on top of the little character, that hope is always present even though you think it is not. The hat could mean nothing at all… but I like the fact that the character is shielding him self from the light, with the large Mexican hat. Not letting hope get to him…
Thus maybe… we are our own depression… because we do not acknowledge that the light “hope” is present at all times.

There are many people that can paint in a technically nice style, but what counts is the visual expression, the way that art communicates. Here I see some of that, as the sadness and happyness is worked in the picture at the same time. That talks to the viewer. It is then a happy thing you get in twenty, but a sad thing that only your technique is commented upon while the communication you attempt with the viewer in this work is what makes it better.

everything you explained was exactly what i was thinking. i'd actually started writing some of that when i realized that i hadn't read your description yet.
i love the way the tear drops down the side of the smiling mask. it really portrays the whole "hidden tears" situation. the tears will never be seen on the smiling face, but they do exist underneath.
the other thing i was thinking about was the light and the way it's held out in front of the faces. it's being held just out of reach. sort of gives in to the whole feeling of hopelessness. the "i'll never be able to reach the good life" sort of feeling.
this is great.. better than great actually. if i had any money i'd be buying a print right now.
definitely have to add this to my favs.
