I'm an artist. It's what I do.

Art, painting, isn't just a big part of my life, after my family, art is my life. When I started painting some 20 years ago, it was clear that this was what I was meant do with my life.
In my daily work I strive to make every painting better than the one before. Every blank canvas is a potential masterpiece. I'm often joined in my studio by my assistants; Jack T Beagle, and Fred G Zilla (my watch gecko).
My work hangs in private collections throughout the United States, Europe, and the Caribbean.

Since 2001 I've concentrated primarily on abstract expressionism, utilizing oil, acrylic and sometimes gouache. I like to paint in bright colors, which tend to give my work a joyful quality. Occasionally, though, I will take a walk on the dark side, if I have something to say.

My primary artistic influences are Michelangelo, Pierre-August Renoir, Henri Matisse, Jackson Pollack, Joan Miro, Joan Mitchell, and Marc Rothko.

I received my formal training at The University of Alaska, Juneau, under George Parker.

I was born in 1950 in Toledo, Ohio.
In 1981 I moved to Juneau, Alaska, where I spent the next 15 years.
In 1996 I moved to Tampa, Florida area. I've also lived in Christchurch, Barbados, and in London, U.K.

What's shakin' at Rodzart 10-08-2010

Hi Folks.  Happy Friday! I hope everyone has had a good week and is looking forward to a great weekend. We have four new paintings for you this week.
We also have two more which weren't quite dry enough to photograph, so you'll get to see those next week.

Oddly enough, all the new paintings for this week are 7 X 10 acrylic on watercolor paper. There's an oil on canvas, and an oil on paper drying still.

The first new painting for this week is
Expression 1084
"Expression 1084".

Next is
Expression 1085
"Expression 1085".

Then we have
Expression 1086
"Expression 1086".

The final new painting for this week is
Composition 1087
"Composition 1087". This piece is a bit of a departure from my usual work. The weather was really great this week and I guess it put me into a weird mood. This is another one of those paintings that you don't necessarily "get", but they're fun and strangely relaxing to look at.

October is my favorite time of year. When I was growing up in Ohio, October would mark the end of the hot summer weather and bring about some beautifully cool and clear days.

In Alaska (Juneau, the real Alaska), October was a bit wet, but still the temperatures would be beautifully cool, and sometimes we'd have a nice sunny day to spend on our boat. Afterwards then, I'd have a marvelous excuse to make a nice pot of soup.

Here in Florida, October usually means the insanely hot summer weather eases a bit. Not as pleasantly cool as in other places, but enough to where you know the difference.

The most interesting effect of October for me is all the memories that this time of year conjures up. It is intriguing to me how certain sensory inputs can trigger certain memories. A cool crisp autumn day, the way oil paint smells, or the colors painted on a canvas.

Hah! See, I actually did have a point to all this rambling. The colors and patterns in my paintings often stir memories for me, and I expect for others as well. Sometimes, I see my art as "seasoning for your soul". In the final analysis, all we have in this life is memories, and, I hope that my work, at least sometimes, helps to trigger warm, happy memories, which you can savor on a cool fall day.

If you've got a few bucks to spare, how about spending them on Haiti. There are a lot of good programs going on, my two favorites are, as always, Doctors without borders, they've got a link below. Also, The Clinton-Bush Haiti fund.

Here are a couple more sites I hope you'll visit and support:

Doctors without Borders.

Katsel Tsi Chen Cho Kyi Ling Buddhist Meditation center.

I'm also on  Twitter

Look me up there if ya feel like it.

I hope everyone has a peaceful and prosperous week. See ya next time.

thanks for the fave. i love your work! i, too, am strongly influenced and drawn to rothko. i have a slide show of rothko's as my desktop background even now! you are living the life i'd like to live. sounds like you're very successful (and i can see why!) and i'm quite pleased that you liked downpour! i don't work, so i spend most of my time creating, and i have a tiny etsy store for my visual art and artisan jewelry, but it hardly provides an income. money really isn't the point for me, though. i just love the idea of someone having MY creation hanging on their wall or around their neck!
