Description

This is something I thought of after finishing Volume 2 of Junji Ito's "Gyo".

For those not in the know, Gyo is a horror manga.  The story follows Tadashi and Kaori, a young couple living in Japan.  One day, fish start scuttling on land... that's right, I typed "scuttle".  See, something is off about these fish.  They have strange, thin stick-like legs on their bodies, all of which come in a variety of sizes, as even SHARKS AND WHALES are scuttling on land with appropriately-sized legs.  They're also releasing some kind of noxious gas.  Before anyone knows it, soon legged sea creatures are scuttling on land all over the country.

Tadashi and Kaori capture one of these fish and take it to Tadashi's uncle, Dr. Koyanagi.  Now, this next few paragraphs contain spoilers about the origins of the walking fish, so don't read that part if you want to find out for yourself.

Koyanagi reveals that the fish was the result of an old World War II weapon experiment implemented by the Imperial Japanese Army.  They were researching a virus that causes the host to swell up and release noxious gases, and developed a gas-powered set of robotic legs that would carry the host around and spread the gas to others, infecting them.  The research, however, was lost when a ship carrying the prototypes of the walking machines was sunk by an enemy aircraft.  Well, now, the machines have started up again.  And in fact, they're scuttling all over THE WORLD now.

At the end of volume 2, it's revealed that a number of students from Kyoto University are immune to the virus, and have gathered together to try and develop a cure and save humanity.  And here is where the game comes in.  Perhaps it would start at the start of the manga where Tadashi and Kaori come in.  From there, it would continue on past the end to show Tadashi or Kaori exploring the ruins of the city to help find things to help make a cure for the virus.  Oh, yeah, that's another thing about the plot of Gyo.  In the manga, Kaori gets a puncture wound from being stabbed by one of the legs from one of the walking machines.  Over time, it's discovered she's been infected by the virus that powers the walking machines and starts swelling up as she fills up with gas.  Before long, she gets captured by one of the machines and used as a power source.  In this version, it's Tadashi who finds the students and helps them in developing the cure.

There's also an OVA adaptation of the manga (which I haven't seen).  In that version, it's Kaori who survives to the end, and Tadashi who's turned into a walking gas bag for one of the machines.  While I haven't seen the OVA,  I figure this could allow the player the option at the start of the game to play as either Tadashi or KaorI.  This, of course, would change certain dialogues in the game.

As for the game itself, maybe something like a third-person action-adventure.  You would traverse the ruined city, having to fight and/or avoid the fish as you do.  To help with the horror vibe, perhaps the game would have limited resources, like ammo and healing items.  This would help in trying to make it more Survival Horror-esque.  Enemies would of course include the walking machines which would have fish on them.  Later on in the manga, however, they start attaching people to themselves, so there would be that.  Perhaps there could be sidequests, too.  You know, little things to do and people to help out who'll give you things if you help them out with something.

That's what I have so far.

Now, the first time I wrote the title up there, it was a little too far to the right.  Luckily, I fixed it instead of just continuing on with it.  I first thought of profiling the fish on its side.  However, I decided instead to have the fish stare right at you.  I don't think I got the walking machine completely right, though.  I saw a more detailed design for one of them, and decided to go with that.  Couldn't find it on many other walking machines, though.

Pictures that I used for reference can be found here.

Excellent idea! I especially like the option of choosing who to play as.
