Hey all!

Qemwen and I have a webcomic about the fancy mice we used to have.
They're not epic fantasy stories on a grand scale. They're mouse-sized stories, and cute like our mice :)

I like telling these stories, and I hope you like reading them.
I'll be posting new stories here on deviantART from now on too.

Click here for Short Tails on tumblr.

How long have you been on DeviantArt?
It was shortly after getting into digital art, and I was looking for inspiring websites. deviantART was one of the first I actually joined. This was six years ago.

What does your username mean?
It comes from a Bande Dessinée by Desberg and Marini. Rochnan is one of the bad guys. I don't really identify with him, but I like the name.

Describe yourself in three words.
Joie de vivre.

Are you left or right handed?
I am left handed when it comes to drawing. I am right handed when it comes to sword fighting (I am one of the sabre fencing crazies who like to pretend they're pirates even in competitive matches. It works Ahooooy Matey!)

What was your first deviation?
It's a portrait I made for my sister's birthday :)
Charlotte by Rochnan

What is your favourite type of art to create?
Sexy ladies? :P The kittens and fruit animals are a lot of fun to do, but working on board games let's me do all kinds of styles and just generally have fun. So yeah, I like to create the kind of art I'm currently being paid for, which is amazing :D

If you could instantly master a different art style, what would it be?
Architectural rendering. Good architectural images have an awesome sense of composition and lighting and a love for texture.

What was your first favourite?
I loved, and still like the clothing of bellydancers, so I'm not terribly surprised that this is my first fave.
TF by Gayfruit

What type of art do you tend to favourite the most?
I have a broad range of faves, but I tend to prefer those with a sense of awe. Usually on a small or personal scale. interesting lighting and composition are cool too, as well as lotsa colors!

Who is your all-time favourite deviant artist?
That's a tough question. sasmyra-craulnober was one of the first friends I made on dA, and we still exchange the occasional note when we have some time. One of my newer friends is sally
I also really enjoy whenever an artwork by yanadhyana, gestiefeltekatze or EytanZana drops into my inbox.

If you could meet anyone on DeviantArt in person, who would it be?
I think meeting either nebezial or SteveArgyle would be a blast. Those guys seem to be having a lot of fun.

How has a fellow deviant impacted your life?
Many have, in many ways. Being in a relationship with Qemwen is an obvious answer, but we met outside of dA. So does that count? No? Aww :(
Being friends with sasmyra-craulnober has definitely impacted my life, most obviously in my daily rhythm: she's from halfway across the globe meaning that to speak one of us needs to skip on some sleep. And we talked a lot back when we were young enough to not need the sleep.

What are your preferred tools to create art?
A good tablet and a good program. Today it's my wacom and photoshop, but I might be switching sometime soon. My iMac has a super reflective screen, which is a pain and makes me count the curtains as my essential tools... :/
In my spare time I use pencils. And I always my sketchbook and mechanical pencil with me. Seriously, always.

What is the most inspirational place for you to create art?
I'd love to have a studio deep in a forest. I love forests :D

What is your favourite DeviantArt memory?
Many memories, but my favourite memory was of the first time someone I think was awesome watched me back. I believe this was Mahafsoun

(Also, since I can't find the usual tag option, let's see if this works... #DeviantArtistQuestionnaire)
CharmingPhotography is shaving her head bold for Little Princess Trust. Little Princess Trust provides real-hair wigs, free of charge, to boys and girls that have lost their own hair through cancer treatment and other illnesses.
My girlfriend Qemwen donated her hair not too long ago for a similair cause in the Netherlands, and we think this is a little bit of the kindness the world can use more of.

To help Charmaine have a wig made, you can follow this link:

Quick question:
"If I started taking commissions starting the third week of next year. What would you request, and what would it be worth?"
Finally, I updated my portfolio website.

Gone is the unintuitive interface!
Welcome to the bigger images!
Now in both dutch and english!

Hey everybody!

I haven't been active for the last few weeks. The reason is quite simple: I'm working on a graduation project. Such things take a little...a lot of one's time. Work, work, work...

MartineHannah is in a similair situation, and she could use some help.
I'll let her explain in her own words:

Dearest lovely watchers,

I'm busy at the moment with graduating for my degree 'Art & education' and i'm researching the subject learning art online vs. learning art in class/school.
I have my own experiences, but that isn't simply enough...
That is why: I need you!!

Would you be so kind and fill in this survey, for me?

It will only take 5 minutes, so it won't take much of your time.
It would mean so much to me!

AND:
I will give away 5x 400 Points and 5 drawing request to 10 people who fill in the survey!
Those 10 people will be randomly chosen, of courz.

Thanks already!
Love, Martine Hannah

Please share this with your watchers!

(The more, the better!)
Soooo.
As you may have noticed, I've been working on an animation for school, and occasionally posting drawings from it.
I just heard I got a little less time to work on it than planned. Well, considerably.
That kinda sucks.
So I talked with my teachers, we looked at what I had done already and we made a plan to go with that, and make it as good as possible. And it looks like there's a lot more I can do with that than I thought.
So I'm carefully optimistic, but a bit bummed out that I might not the animation I've been showing you stuff from all this time.
I don't know what I'll be showing next, but I thought I'd at least put this up here.

Just goes to show that life's full of surprises.
I like surprises though, they make life interesting :)
Hello everybody! :D

It's been a long while since I last updated on deviantART. But starting two weeks from now, that will change!
Why, you ask?
I'm working on an animation, and I will share my progress with everyone. In fact, if you can share your comments in turn, that'd be great -you see, this is the first time I'm embarking on such a Big Thing, and Big Things are done better when you have others to help you with it. And then, you can learn from my mistakes and successes for when you want to start a Big Thing yourself.
Sounds exciting, no? :)

Leading up to the start, I will post some of my preparation and references and ideas, so you can already get involved before the actual thing starts.
Linky time!

jorisanimates.blogspot.nl/

I will update deviantART whenever I've reached a milestone, and ofcourse every time I make a drawing worth showing.
And that's what I'm up to.
Be seeing you, as you will be seeing me ;)

Okay, I got tagged again...sasmyra-craulnober did it.

What is your favourite genre of music (and why)?
Not quite sure. At the moment I feel like something between this and this, with a good dose of this so I guess that's where my favourite music is? Most of my music falls between either of those.

Say you meet a genie, and he gives you three wishes, what do you wish for?
A real-life Command-Z. Being able to undo things would be really, really helpful. Also because it would allow me to make bolder choices in life.
Professor X's telepathic abilities. Yes please.
I'd grant the genie freedom. Because I watched Alladin.

Is there a job you would never do (and why)?
If there's no job satisfaction, I would not do it.

Who is your favourite villain (and why)?
Do you know how hard this is? So many great villains...
Then again, the best villains are those who have the best of intentions, but merely lack ethical consciousness.
Let's say the Illusive Man from Mass Effect 2 (in 3, he's changed too much). Also because of his sweet office and accompanying musical theme :D

If you were an animal (real, fantastic, scifi or otherwise), which one would you be (and why)?
A Lionfish. They look awesome, live in warm climates, and are quite on top of the food chain.
Also dangerous to your health...

What is your favourite time period?
The future. Anything is possible! :D

What would you willingly write an essay about?
The art of animation.

Would you rather have a magic wand, a lightsaber, or a sonic screwdriver (why)?
I might go for the sonic screwdriver, but then a magic wand has a lot more potential use, doesn't it? (Including conjuring a sonic screwdriver and a lightsaber.)

If you could take a superhero's place, who would you be?
Tony Stark/Iron Man. I'd love to be in his position. I'm much more likely to be a Charles Xavier/Professor X though, especially as portrayed in X-Men First Class.

What do you believe about the origins (Big Bang/evolution, God, gods, aliens, coincidence, other kinds of higher powers)?
I support Darwinism. But that's not about origins, it's about how things go on after they were created.
So how did it start? I have no idea. You could say Big Bang, but then someone else could ask you who started the Big Bang. Is it God, or gods? If so, what if the gods were aliens? Then who created those aliens?

Time to turn it around! :D
10 questions for you!

What makes a good movie for you?

What's harder to define: love or art? (And why?)

Close your eyes. What's the first thing that comes to mind?

What's your favourite food? (And can you make it?)

If you could be famous for one thing, what would it be?

What's your favourite saying or quote?

Any thoughts on the afterlife?

What's the fluffiest, cuddliest thing you've ever seen?

What's a question you'd love to answer but were never asked?

What's the answer to that question?

Favorite book?
Almost any kind of art book, especially 'complete works of' books. 'The Complete Works of Leonardo da Vinci' is probably one of the most awe-inspiring (set of two) books I have right now. I like a pair of nice, big and very eye-pleasing...books (that's a 'k'!)

High, Urban or Low Fantasy?
I love Urban Fantasy as Neil Gaiman tells it, but otherwise Low Fantasy. I like to keep it real (just as I prefer hard scifi).

Favorite Tool of Trade?
Pen Tablet, Photoshop for practical purposes. Although nothing beats messing around with charcoal, getting black stains on everything and loving it! :D

Last concert you've been?
A Gamelan concert.

Favorite schoolsubject?
I am probably biased towards the Visual Arts, as that's what I'm studying to teach in. Other than that, Biology.

Döner or Crêpe?
Crêpe.
Good memories...

Favorite number?
12. I found it to be a very useful number.

Whats your element?
Earth.

What should I write on your grave stone?
I would like you to draw something instead :)

What's your favorite word?
"Joie de vivre"
Can I count this as one word? Pretty please?

Alternatively: "Eloquence".

Because Short-Takes told me to.

Lovingly stolen from Mexitallica, it goes like this:

IN MY PANTS MEME.

RULES:
1. Put your iTunes on shuffle (Or Mp3 Player, or whatever you use)
2. When you get your song title, add "in my pants" after the song. YOU MUST WRITE IT NO MATTER HOW FUNNY IT SOUNDS
3. Do this 20 times.
4. Tag. Your turn =P

1. Off to a good start! Opening with Flat Zone in my pants (from Super Smash Brothers Melee), from the Super Smash Brothers Brawl soundtrack.
2. Underneath the Rotting Pizza in my pants, from Final Fantasy VII.
3. The Friendly Faith Plate in my pants, continues the soundtrack thing. It's from Portal 2: Songs to Test By, which you can download from Portal 2's site www.thinkwithportals.com/music…
4. Lonely, lonely in my pants (さみしいさみしい), from the Spirited Away Image Album. This feels deeply wrong.
5. Gehn Speaks in my pants, from Riven, the Sequel to Myst. I'm trying really hard not to visualize this...
6. Time for a Rest in my pants, from Final Fantasy XII.
7. The Revelation - The Sacrifice in my pants, thanks to the Myst IV Revelation soundtrack.
8. Clocks in my pants, the Coldplay song from A Rush of Blood to the Head.
9. Torvus Bog in my pants (long version), from Metroid Prime 2 Dark Echoes.
10. The Swamp in my pants, also from Myst IV. I wonder if the next song will be something with 'Marsh' in it?
11. Lately, in my pants, on the Sky at Night by I Am Kloot. You should give them a listen. I recommend watching their video for 'Proof'  www.iamkloot.com/ (Look under 'Media'.)
12. Journey of the Sorcerer in my pants, from the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
13. Virtual Crime in my pants, from the first Ghost in the Shell's soundtrack.

17. Meager Advance in my pants. Thank you Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles.
18. A Road to Somewhere in my pants. Hey! another Spirited Away track!
19. Multiplayer in my pants (From Metroid Prime 2), originally from Metroid Prime 2 (Dark) Echoes, but in this case from Smash Bros. Brawl.
20. You've been Followed in my pants. The Myst III Exile soundtrack closes the list with this nonsensical (or is it cryptic?) track.

Hope you enjoyed.

I wish I'd had
So Long and Thanks for All the Fish in my pants (reprise), from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Soundtrack.
Starálfur, from Sigur Rós' album Ágætis byrjun. Somehow 'Staring Elf in my pants' sounds funny.
Blood Ritual in my pants, from Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl. For the girls (don't hit me! :XD:)

I'm glad I didn't get
Child Recalled in my pants, from Final Fantasy the Spirits Within. This would be very wrong.

Hello everyone!

You probably wouldn't have guessed, but I watch a show called 'Inside the Actor's Studio'. It's a show where actors get interviewed by James Lipton. I say interviewed, as it basically is an interview, but it is usually done very well, and mister Lipton is a brilliant interviewer.
At the end, you feel like you know a whole lot more about an actor.

One of my favourite parts is a questionnaire. The following is from wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inside_t…

[...] most of the show is a one-on-one interview conducted by Lipton, this is followed by the host submitting a questionnaire to the guest. The questionnaire concept was originated by French television personality Bernard Pivot, after the Proust Questionnaire. The ten questions Lipton asks are:

What is your favorite word?
What is your least favorite word?
What turns you on?
What turns you off?
What sound or noise do you love?
What sound or noise do you hate?
What is your favorite curse word?
What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?
What profession would you not like to do?
If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?

Now I wonder, what would I answer, if I were to be in the chair. I'd also like to be able to come back in one year, with new answers, and to see how I've changed.
So here goes: :D

My favorite word is probably 'eloquence'. Not necessarily to impress people by knowing a difficult word, but mostly because it's such a joy to pronounce. That it means you have a way with words is a happy coincidence. :D
My least favorite words are the usual four-letter swear words. They're a bit dull and unimaginative. You can also use them as almost anything, like a verb, noun, etcetera. And because of that, they mean almost nothing.
I get turned on by creativity. When I see someone get inspired, and get creative, that's when I also get inspired and creative. It's why I'm here on deviantART.
Eternal nothingness turns me off. No excitement, no exploration, no joy. Just nothing. It scares me.
My favorite sound is the sound of rain on the leaves in a forest. It's probably my favorite smell as well.
I don't really like the sounds a body involuntarily makes, like heavy breathing, the sound of an empty stomach, or passing gas. I do love the sound of a heartbeat though. It's a brilliant sound.
Favorite curse word? I like those old ones. I usually say something only your grandfather would say when I'm frustrated, They're very tame, and hardly insulting. But because of that, they also make you smile a little, which takes the edge off the frustration.
I would ike to be a rockstar, probably. My aim is to give visual artists such a status, but if I can't become a wannabe-rockstar, I suppose I'll have to settle for the real thing. :XD: Seriously, I have absolutely no talent with any musical instrument, so the second on this list would be stuntman for action movies. That would be awesome.
I really wouldn't want to be anything in politics. I have no clue as to how the life of a politician looks, but I get a feeling it's just not the place for me.
In my mind, He would probably say "Hey you! Aren't you the bloke who believed in reincarnation? Get back there!" And then I'll reincarnate as a small rock or something. Hopefully in a big forest.

And that's it. Hope you liked my answers. :D
What would you answer?
  • Watching: My homework pile up in the corner of my room.
Hello all,

I've been featured in the journal of weida34, so here's a friendly link back :)

Also, I've been thinking about uploading my school stuff to dA, but it's probably a bit too artsy-fartsy. In the meantime, you can still check it out here if you want: www.jorisvanbeusekom.com/HKU.h…
Okay, so my last entry is, by now, horribly outdated. And I've just seen the movie 'Where the Wild Things Are'. 1+1=2

I like dreamy movies that make you feel good, and this movie does just about that. In short, it's a story of a young boy who likes to dream. One day, he gets into an argument, and runs away from home. He runs, and runs, and sees a boat. He jumps into the boat and sails away.
After a while, he sees a shore, and decides to take a look. This is where he finds the Wild Things, a group of big and strange creatures, but also very playful, just like him.

And now we're at the point where anything I tell you will spoil a bit of the wonder, so all I'm going to say is to go see the movie. Seriously, if you like Ghibli movies, if you like to be taken into a wonderful world...this is for you.
  • Watching: Where the Wild Things Are
  • Eating: Pancakes, which feel right after seeing the movie.
So, today was the introductory day for the arts highschool.
On itself, that was very useful, but not as exciting as I'd hoped.

Buuut, I've met some newish people (I've met some before once), and we went into the city, had a drink, and generally having a very relaxed day.

Let's see what tomorrow will bring.
  • Drinking: Something cool. It's too hot over here.
I like to draw cheerful drawings, because it's nice to cheer people up.
But somehow, cheerfulness is usually seen as something for children and everyone young.
People take you less serious (ofcourse, that's the point: don't worry, be happy.) and therefore tend to consider lighthearted work less professional than serious paintings.

I think that's ridiculous. Why can't you be professional and optimistic?
Some people need to stop confusing 'adult' with 'chronically depressed'.
  • Listening to: Buena Vista Social Club
I recently bought the movie My Neighbour Totoro.

This is my kind of movie: fantastical worlds, cheerfulness, creatures...
I think I'm going to draw a Totoro after dinner. Yeah, I will :)

  • Eating: Not enough, am waiting for dinner
