Oil, 12 x 16 inches

Painted to commemorate humanity's first detailed glimpse of Pluto and it's moon, Charon, made last year by the New Horizons spacecraft. It was an amazing accomplishment, and a momentous event to be alive for as the face of the dwarf planet became known to humans for the first time in history!

It takes light 4.6 hours to reach Pluto from Earth. To get a sense of just how far away that is, check out this great video by Wylie Overstreet and Alex Gorosh. At nearest approach, Pluto is about the same distance as Neptune.

Beautiful and very descriptive of the intimate connection between Charon and Pluto and the in-between, the meaning of Pluto is so well expressed, I wonder what your thoughts were when you painted it.

I swear to God, Pluto looks like an actual sphere I could reach into my computer screen and grab right now.  Magnificent.
