In the 15-minute video below, I answer 4 questions:
- Am I going to draw more Rolamaton artwork? (asked by Ampliflier)
- When Rolamaton/Robocity was still fanwork, why were my versions so different from canon?
- Why do Military robots get their weapons neutralized?
- Robot/human sex in Rolamaton?
Since I'm very soft-spoken in the video (and my Italian accent is kinda strong), I added English subtitles [CC] for you to understand what I'm saying.
Below is also a slightly edited transcript of the video:
Hello Robocity Fans!
Last time I asked if you had some questions so I could make a Q&A for you. Of course, the questions should be about Rolamaton, the ex-Robocity (Rolamaton *The Robocity*, since I kept that as a subtitle).
I only had a question so far, so I thought I would still make the video, but I will also add a few questions I was asked in the past to the Q&A. Of course, I encourage you to submit more questions so I can answer in the next video.
So, Ampliflier asks if I'm going to draw more Rolamaton artwork.
The answer is YES, I'm going to! But I also want to support artists on DeviantART and I think every time I have money, I'll try to hire an artist to draw a cover for my stories. So for each Rolamaton Tale, the cover might not always be my own work. It's also very exciting because there are some big artists I really love from various comics, including Transformers, that I would love to hire for Rolamaton. That would be so cool! So cool x3 (Fangirling apart... ^^)
Another question I got very often, especially when Robocity/Rolamaton was still a fanwork (so many robots were still my versions of TFs and other robots) was why some characters obviously inspired by TFs are so different from their originals?
So for example, in the context of Rolamaton as an original work, I was inspired by two or more TFs for a single character, and this is because sometimes I have similar feelings for more TFs, more robots (like Mazinger or the Brave Police robots), and I don't want to create characters that are too similar, so a single Robocitan can represent more than one TF for my heart. And I think is kind of normal for authors to do.
Another question is about Military Robots in Rolamaton.
I created this criminal organization called I.A.R. (it's an acronym for International Army of Robots), but not all Military Robots come from I.A.R.. There are Military robots who were simply built as soldiers to help the armies around the world - but the normal armies, not the criminal organization. And the fact that, when they come to Rolamaton, they get their weapons neutralized is not an act of violence against them. It's a rule: you stay in Robocity/Rolamaton only if you agree to get your weapons removed. Because Rolamaton is strictly a pacifist place. You can't have weapons. There are some you can keep, but they don't have killing power. So if they have killing power, they will get removed.
This is something I'm very strict about Rolamaton because if I had to run a community that promotes peace, I wouldn't want people to carry weapons around. So I feel this is a good choice in the narration and I think my Military robots already know that if they come to Robocity to have a chance at redemption, they have to give up the worst things from their past. That is weapons, a violent lifestyle, and the opportunity to hurt others and themselves.
I think this is maybe the most stressing part of my world, because you will see these characters struggling to adapt; not because I want them to struggle, but... you know, in stories we explore the human condition, and the adaptation to a new lifestyle that you chose to embrace is not easy, and the past is always behind you, haunting you, reminding you of things that you believed but you chose not to believe anymore.
This is all relatable for us humans, and Robocitans are very human in this sense.
Another question I was asked in the past and I want to answer now is about sexual relationships between humans and robots, because in the past I used more of this.
In the new Rolamaton I'm trying to change a few things because I sort of feel a social responsibility about this. Doesn't mean I can't have robots and humans making love in my stories, but I want to make it something that some couples do, and some can't do, or don't want to do.
Because I don't want to give the impression that I support this kind of thing in real life. I like it in fiction because in (my) fiction robots are people, but I wouldn't in real life. If there was a sentient robot in real life, I would agree to a romantic relationship, kissing, cuddling - okay, would be a sort of person in that case, but I feel in real life *that* kind of thing should stay within the species - so humans with humans and robots with robots.
But of course romantic relationships, platonic relationships... I have no problem with those in real life. Just not the sex. But fiction is different - I mean, impossible things happen in fiction, so why not? It's not a problem. But I want to be clear about this because sometimes readers mistake the stories an author writes - so their worlds, their ethics - for the author's ethics, thoughts and beliefs.
That's not always the case. Rolamaton has a lot of my ethics and a lot of my beliefs, but some things are strictly in-universe and are not something I would support in real life.
That doesn't mean you don't have to support something I don't, but I as a person have my own beliefs and ethics, and when I write or draw artwork, I also have social responsibility about what I share, so I can't compromise myself. Okay?
Of course if there is something you really wish to see in my stories and I don't write it because it's against my ethics or what else, you can always write fanfiction. I'm not chasing you to say "nooo you can't publish that because I'm against it". You are free to do whatever you want to do. Just don't ask me to compromise myself and change my stories because you want to see something I don't want to put in them.
That's all, okay?
I hope to see more of your questions. You can comment on the status where I ask for questions and see you again in the next video.
Bye bye <3
