When Pakku gets upset about something, he gets INTENSE.

I had my monthly 7th Sea RP game today.  As I think I mentioned a few weeks ago, for prep work I’d written letters from NPCs to various player characters.  Since they’ve been distributed, I can now share the contents of those letters.  Lots of little story hooks that characters can choose to pursue (or avoid) as they see fit.  I’m curious to see what they’ll do in future sessions.

To Captain Siegfried and First Mate Hugin

Of the Explorer’s Society

Dear Sirs,

I have heard that you are both noteworthy users of Vendel’s unique cultural tradition, Rune crafting. As founder of the local Rune Crafter Association, I would be honored to invite you and any guests you might wish to bring to speak at our weekly meeting. We would be most interested to hear of how Runes have practical applications in the field.

We meet every Tirsdag for a noon lunch in the second story of the fine A. C. Perch’s Tea Merchants Shop, on Kronprinsen Street, Number 5. Simply ask for Ket upon arrival. Consider this a standing invitation. We hope you will visit whenever you are able.

Wishing you health and fortune,

Ket Runescraft

Of the Rune Crafter Association

By now I expect you have deeply infiltrated the Explorer’s Society. You always did have an odd knack for convincing others to like you. Even as a child, you knew how to manipulate the trust of those you met on an instinctive level. Use this ability for good, and let it serve our purposes.

My sources indicate you should arrive in Kirk soon. If the records of Avalon did not have the information needed, Kirk will. Find the names of those responsible for supplying Domae stones to the Lady Blanche du Montaigne starting sixteen years ago. Who approved the orders? Who shipped them? Get me every detail. I want the line traced.

I remind you again to avoid Domae stones. They aren’t safe for someone like you. They will call to you. Do not trust your dreams. Do not trust your body. Take precautions. The Explorer Society has always been too careless with their handling of things they do not understand. Do not acquire their bad habits.

– Maître D’Armes

My Dear Captain,

I have left this letter with express instructions that it be delivered whenever you are next in port.

Your last visit filled me with energy and excitement for weeks after. Ah, to hear of such adventures! It reminds me of my youth. When next you are in Kirk, I invite you to visit me. Please bring as many of your crew as you wish. The news from Avalon says that you recently inducted many of them into the Explorer’s Society proper, and I would like to welcome them all personally. I assure you, I set a very good table. We shall invite the Commodore as well, and make it a fine evening indeed. Let me know as soon as you arrive, and my staff shall begin preparations at once!

Warmest Regards,

Isolde von Haelbroeck

From the desk of Captain Natalia Calligari to Father Sebastian of the Church of the Prophets:

Your message has been received.   It will be followed in the spirit with which it was sent.

Context note:  Sooo…Father Sebastian may have sent a letter that was a bald-faced lie to Captain Calligari.  Annnnnd it’s possible she knew it.

Dear Gale,

I’m sending this by Porte Post, so it should be waiting for you when you dock. Might be worth looking into for a retirement plan. Steady gig. Good pay. Not that either of those things are what you’re looking for now, on that loose cannon scouting ship of yours. But someday, you might want to settle down.

Ha! Just kidding. As if either of us are seeking a quiet life in the mailroom. If I live to 103, I hope I’m still digging up ruins and dodging traps. That’s the best way to go.

Some news that might interest you — Kirsten’s Captain now. Officially, St. Cloud’s been called away to the family estate for matters of high importance. Unofficially…well, Kirsten tried to visit her there and was turned away. The two of them have been close friends from a very young age and they’re both of noble blood. I mean, St. Cloud turned the Captaincy over to Kirsten, for Theus’ sake! There’s clearly no ill will there. The only reason I can think of for Kirsten to be barred from the premises is that St. Cloud was not there.

A “merchant” ship the St. Cloud family owns, with a rather extraordinary amount of cannons and a rather sleek design, quietly left dock three days ago. And it seems that Puck and the noble bonded to him have also been suspiciously missing for the same amount of time? No shortage of students out for that kid’s blood. If she’s on that ship, I can’t say I blame her. The question is, who else is on that ship with her?

Rumor has it — and this is being kept very quiet on upper channels, but in places like the Fish Knuckle it’s rampant speculation — Oh, Bickle and Nelliie say “Hello,” by the way — Rumor has it that St. Cloud’s lost the patronage of the Lady of the Purest Stream. I’m not sure exactly what that means, but the locals talk about it the way the rest of the world might talk about a Lord loosing their lands and title. Serious business. I guess there’s sort of a grace period for this kind of thing? To see if you can get a new Legend to pay attention to you. Avalon nobility doesn’t seem to care what sort of Sidhe patron you have, just that you have one.

That’s the impression I’ve gotten from Gertrude, anyway. She says “Hello,” too. Well, she actually said “Hail and Well Met,” and bid you “Swift Voyage and the Ill-Gotten Gains of every Noble Brigand you Cross,” but I think that’s just her way of saying “Hello and good luck,” these days. She’s adjusting still.

Avalon is strange.

Thankfully, now that we’ve got a new Captain sorted, we’ll be heading out soon to take a look at the island you found. Tell your Captain to watch his back out there. That “merchant” ship was flying the St. Cloud family flag when it left, but I’m not sure that’s what colors will be flying if you meet on the waves.

Oh, I’m not sure if you like poetry, but I heard this by a local that folks around here seem pretty taken with. Not sure if it’s something you enjoy, but on an off chance, I’ve enclosed a small collection of works in this style. They call them Sonnets. Here’s one I liked:

The world is too much with us; late and soon,
Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers;—
Little we see in Nature that is ours;
We have given our hearts away, a sordid boon!
This Sea that bares her bosom to the moon;
The winds that will be howling at all hours,
And are up-gathered now like sleeping flowers;
For this, for everything, we are out of tune;
It moves us not. Great Theus! I’d rather be
A Pagan suckled in a creed outworn;
So might I, standing on this pleasant lea,
Have glimpses that would make me less forlorn;
Have sight of Proteus rising from the sea;
Or hear old Triton blow his wreathèd horn.

Poems like this make me wonder about what these ruins we’re always chasing after are really about. Might old Triton have been one of the Syrneth? Or maybe it’s just the Sidhe again, and they’re all having a good laugh at us when they read poems like this.

I’ll have plenty of time to think about it, sorting through the wreckage of this Domae ruin your ship found (and destroyed — honestly, scout ships! Are you sure you’re not interested in a transfer?) I suspect we’ll be stationed here for most of the coming year. I hope you left at least a few interesting things intact. It’s no fun if nothing can blow up in your face at least a little.

– Jelena

Context note:  The poem (with some alterations) is by William Wordsworth.  St. Cloud is a Captain that the crew publicly embarrassed.  I also based her on the St. Cloud character from Venture Brothers.

My Dearest Calico,

A letter arrived from Avalon yesterday, informing me that you won some sort of contest with the Explorer’s Society! It was quite curious; the date on the letter was the same date it arrived. I didn’t see who delivered it, although the neighbor’s boy insisted fairies did it. Such imagination! He sometimes reminds me of you when you were that age. Always dreaming of things beyond the horizon.

I am so proud of you! The Explorer’s Society is a very prestigious organization. I know your father would have been delighted. Did you know, he talked about joining them, once the navy didn’t need him any more? It’s like you’re carrying on in his footsteps!

Nichola will be happy to hear you are well. You remember Nichola Capris, of course. And his father, Esteban? Nichola’s inherited his father’s business, and Esteban’s settled down in a place nearby. I had no idea he’d moved here, but it turns out that we go to the same church. At first we avoided one another, but after what happened at the grand prix he made a point to ask how you were, and he’s been making an effort to visit regularly ever since. We’ve both been very concerned about you, but I always knew you’d find your way on your own! Still, it was very good to have word. Please thank your friends for sending that letter. It gladdened my heart to read it!

I suppose it isn’t fair of me to ask you to write more. I haven’t been keeping steady communications either. I knew that you needed space, and I’ve been trying to respect that, but…well, my life has been moving on here too, and I have some news for you that it doesn’t seem right to put in a letter. It’s nothing bad, so please don’t worry! But I hope that you’ll visit soon. I miss you, and so do Esteban and Nichola.

Much love,

Your Mother

Context note:  Esteban and Nichola are both people that Calico is at best a rival to and at worst blames for a lot of misfortune in his life.  So I’m sure that will go well.  Also, fairies absolutely delivered that letter.

To Inquisitor Sebastian
Of the Most Holy Order
Of the Prophet’s Inquisitors

We have heard disturbing stories as of late as to your conduct abroad. We would not, of course, rely on rumor to judge your actions. Legion is only too eager to send agents undermining the good work of our Order through such gossip.

Therefore, we ask that you return home to Castille to account for your actions and renew your oaths on this sacred ground.

May Theus Abide,

High Inquisitor Lucia Rodrigo de Santoyo de Templo
Of the Most Holy Order
Of the Prophet’s Inquisitors

Context note:  Things that the Inquisitors may have heard about include founding a cult, performing miracles, consorting with sorcerers, and that’s just the start of a very long list.  Looks like Father Sebastian may be in for quite a casual chat with the Inquisition.

All of these letters were printed out on different kinds of paper, and then mangled or dressed up to the degree that suited the situation and personality of those that sent them. I even wrote one on vellum.  Just to be extra fancy.  Another one I soaked in tea and salt water.  Because I am THAT kind of nerd.
