This is a huge mountain shadow.
An impressive totally natural phenomenon.
On Earth every object caught by slanting rays (at sunset or sunrise) produces a shadow, and mountains of course are no exception.

Photo taken at sunset from the summit of Mount Rocciamelone (3,538 meters / 11,603 feet), the highest and most stylish peak of Susa Valley, Italy.

As in previous shots of mine, here it's again not possible to see the mountain itself because I was on its very summit, but we can admire its huge shadow pointing east, thanks to the low rays of the setting sun in the west, exactly behind me and my camera.
This projection to the east happens on daily basis, at sunset, if the sky is clear. Specifically when there are no high clouds blocking the path between the sun's low rays and the mountain conical shape.
You can have also a bad cloudy weather on the plain, this really doesn't matter.
Also at dawn it's possible to observe the same effect of shadow projection, but obviously with the cone pointing west due to the sun rising east.
(It goes without saying, but obviously during the day, when the sun is high, there are no shadows).

The interesting thing this time was the presence of the full moon... rising on the horizon, slightly to the left of the shadow's tip.
This due to the fact that on October 12th 2011, when I've got this pic, sunset was expected at 6:36 pm, and moonrise at 6:26 pm. A really perfect synchronism.

I've used a telephoto lens here (who's saying that for landscape photography you -absolutely- need a wide angle? ahah) just to concentrate the attention on the two subjects: moon and shadow.
So the shadow is captured here towards the end of its utterly long extension. It's pointing directly above the Po Valley, approximately in the area of Turin's airport, in the town of Caselle.
A distance of over 70 km !!

What is impressive is just how regular is the shadow's shape. It looks like the shadow of one of the great pyramids than a natural mountain :)

The fact that the shadow looks like a near perfect pyramid gives me fantasy story ideas!!

Seriously, it feels like I'm watching "Neverending Story" or something with the 80's fantasy mystique!

Yes, it's just necessary to walk, walk... climb... hike... then walk again, climb, hike... and so on :-)
The love for adventure is always worthwhile in this kind of photography

Fascinating! Were the surrounding mountains not to suggest differently, I'd have supposed you were atop the Great Pyramid in Egypt! Great capture!

eheh thanks :-), oh yes I really hope one day to visit the pyramids!
In any case, the summit of this mountain (Rocciamelone) is indeed a perfectly natural shaped pyramid, with the great advantage that it's very much larger of any Egyptian pyramid!
a 3,538 meters mountain is really something unbelievably huuuuuge :-)
best regards!
