Leonov 3: Main Tank Separation

The third in my and Drell-7’s (drell-7.deviantart.com/) series of images showing the spacecraft Cosmonaut Alexi Lenov as described in Clarke’s novel, “Odyssey Two”. At this stage of the mission the transjovian burn is nearly complete and the ship can shed extra mass of the large fuel tanks that were designed to allow the craft to get to Jupiter space as soon as possible – most importantly ahead of Discovery II. Discarding the giant fuel tanks reveals a much less massive design within.
