Leonov 2: Transjovian Burn

Description

The second in our series based on the “Odyssey Two” description (book) of the Soviet spacecraft, Leonov, shows the ship performing its transjovian burn using its Sakarov drive. The radiators extending off the engineering section glow a dull red with shed heat energy.

Drell-7 (drell-7.deviantart.com/) and I thought through the design carefully and extensively, with functionality begin our guiding beacon. Point to any detail on the ship and we can explain what it does. We even looked at the last minute mission modification of adding the US crew members. That extra weight had to be compensated from somewhere so we left off a couple of the Jovian atmospheric probes that the ship was originally supposed to be carrying.

Art by Drell-7 (drell-7.deviantart.com/), design by Rob Caswell and Drell-7.

Arguably one of the best hard SF designs I've seen, captured with a brilliant sense of drama.
