Vasil Levski Statue in Washington by rlkitterman Vasil Levski Statue in Washington by rlkitterman
Vasil Levski (1837-1873) was a Bulgarian revolutionary who organized the national resistance against occupation by the Ottoman Empire. His dream was to establish Bulgaria as a free republic in which all people were equal, but he did not live to see this realized, as he was killed by the Turks. Vasil Levski is considered the greatest Bulgarian of all time, and this statue outside the Bulgarian embassy in Washington DC is dedicated to him. It bears the inscription «Свобода и всекиму своето», Bulgarian for "Freedom and to each his own."
