I used to create collage sheets using public domain images and sell them. I chose public domain images because then the person using the collage sheet didn't have to worry about copyright when using the images in their work. I no longer have that business, but my fascination with images persists.

I've decided it would be wise to share a few sources besides DeviantArt (which has great stock sources) where other artists can get reference images or things they can use as stock.

The first place to check for antique photos, postcards, advertising, posters, etc. is the digital collections of the Library of Congress.

Library of Congress Digital Collections

There is much more than than just still images here (they also have music division, and a "Motion Picture, Broadcasting, and Recorded Sound" division), but mostly I've been interested in the still images of the "Prints and Photographs" division. Be sure to double check the copyright on any image you choose - but tons of them are public domain due to age. And there are thousands of images!

Okay, now, speaking of governmental sources... In the United States, works produced by federal agencies or employees of those agencies in the course of their work are public domain. This means that you can get great "space" imagery from NASA, and animal photos, etc., from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

NASA

Talk about great images to use in making textures or backgrounds!

US Fish and Wildlife

This is a link to the image library. But you can go to the main library page  to look at journals and videos and such.

How about some classic comic book imagery? There are two sites that have extensive collections of comics from the "golden age" of comic books (plus a few other gems!). These are Comic Books Plus and the Digital Comic Museum.

Comic Books Plus

Digital Comic Museum

Here you can find comics whose copyright has lapsed, due to age, neglect, or publisher demise. All the classic genres: Adventure, romance, horror, crime, superhero, jungle, crime, suspense, "historical", just plain weird - you name it. There are also public service one shot comics and foreign comics. And if that isn't enough, Comic Books Plus also has comic strips and pulp fiction! (I found myself reading a couple of issues of "Jerry Drummer: Boy Hero of the Revolutionary War" just for fun...)

And last, Wikimedia Commons, the image repository for Wikipedia. Of course, not everything here is public domain, but quite a lot is. Many people upload images and choose either public domain or a "free to use however anyone pleases" license. Many more are under Creative Commons licenses. Further, there are also a lot of vintage photos and images, and images of fine art.

Wikimedia Commons

Some areas of the Commons definitely worth a look:

Images from a former publisher of educational materials, Pearson Scott Foresman. These are high quality line art images. Commons has been asking for help processing the raw scans of the images, but already many good .pngs and quite a number of .svgs have been produced from the donations.

Pearson Scott Foresman, Publisher images

Or how about an eclectic collection of pre-1923 illustrations and photos?

Misc. Pre-1923 Images

Or another collection of images that includes old banknotes, illustrations, and whatnot....

2000+ PD images

Have fun!

If you want to request art by me, please read my rules on them.

I'm a 49 yo mother of 4, who came to being an artist the long way around. My father was an artist, as are some of my kids (:iconfattendrils: fattendrils and :iconinvaderika: InvaderIka) but I always thought of myself as just a "crafter". My father taught me to "see" things though, and encouraged me to draw and paint what I "see".

I have fibromyalgia, and eventually could no longer keep up the jewelry making business I had, because of mobility and fatigue issues. So now I draw, and paint, and hope to become an illustrator or a colorist. Maybe with enough work and practice, I can become a comic book artist, a dream I've had since childhood.

I prefer traditional mediums, being less than savvy with a computer. I love watercolor, though I technically produce "mixed media" work because I also use pen and ink.

I'm a geek. I fly my geek flag proudly. I love Marvel (comics, movies, and tv), like DC comics (my husband collects comics), adore Usagi Yojimbo, and watch Doctor Who passionately. (My first Doctor was IV, my favorite is XII.) I play tabletop RPGs: currently running one Hero system game while playing in another, and also playing in my husband's 7th Sea game. I have also played and enjoyed Shadowrun and Stalking the Night Fantastic. It;s been a long time since I cosplayed, but I've made Halloween costumes that range from TMNT to Batman and Superman to a Bionicle to Harley Quinn to Alice to a Dalek and a Cyberman and a Weeping Angel. (All homemade - 4 kids, no money, who can afford to BUY costumes?) I used to hang out with the SCA but its now been several years due to my mobility issues.

I currently am working to improve my figure drawing by drawing characters from our games and character concepts from my imagination.

I live in a suburb of Cleveland Ohio with my husband, 4 kids, 1 room-mate, and 4 cats.
