Description

This is my entry for the Myst-fanclub [link] Make One, Share One contest (I got an extension ^_^;; )

I'm so excited to have finally combined my absolute love of the Myst series and my obsession with making stuff out of metal. The games have shaped my aesthetic immensely, and I'm driven always by the desire to make an object that feels as real as Riven felt to me. Here, I think I've succeeded.

When I started this project, I thought I'd be able to etch some parts of the design--but my workshop lacks the needed image transfer tools/supplies, and the makeshift transfer technique I was planning didn't work. Sawing out every facet of the design was crazy, a foolish and awesome notion that wormed its way into my head and wouldn't let go. So on Saturday, I settled down, put the Riven soundtrack on repeat, and sawed. And sawed. And sawed. And sawed. I think I may have slept and ate in there somewhere. On Monday, I was out of town all day supporting my partner at her grandmother's funeral. Today I came home from work and textured the copper disc, polished the brass seal, and riveted the layers together. (This was also my first project with rivets!)

Saw blades broken: 10
Repetitions of the Riven soundtrack: I lost count
Injuries sustained: 1 (the saw blade slipped)
Rivets made: 14

(I didn't freehand this! I pasted on an enlarged printout from Myst and Riven Illustrated [link] and used that as my guide.)

This is a bit under 6" in diameter--could be a coaster, inkwell stand, or wall decoration. I may enlarge the holes around the edge so it could more easily hang on a wall. I've also applied a thin layer of renaissance wax (a museum-type substance to prevent fingerprints and tarnish).
