The Night

The night breeze smells like bush honey, wafting through my open window with the sound of chirping crickets. Even against the night sky - black, they say - I can see the silhouettes of trees; It makes me wonder, Does black really exist? Or is it just a word? I thought I knew, but Now I'm not so sure Come to think of it, I've never seen white either; Coloured pencils named for non-colours Always have a trace of yellow in them Or am I just imagining that? The white trimmings of my room Are faintly pinkish, I think But how am I to know? I didn't choose the colour And anyway, it's dark. Back to the night. Morning comes earl

An Evening With Sings-to-Trees

Sings-to-Trees had hair the color of sunlight and ashes, delicately pointed ears, and eyes the translucent green of new leaves. His shirt was off, revealing the sort of tanned muscle acquired from years of healthy outdoor living, and you could have sharpened a sword on his cheekbones. He was saved from being a young maiden's fantasy—unless she was a very peculiar young maiden—by the fact that he was buried up to the shoulder in the unpleasant end of a heavily pregnant unicorn. Bits of unicorn dung, which was not noticeably more ethereal than horse dung, were sliding down his arm, and every time the mare had a contraction, he lost feeling in

It Has Come To My Attention

It has come to my attention that people like me are generally not welcome in fairy tales. It's the talking birds that do it. The minute a sparrow shows up to pipe a direful warning it's all over down at the first hurdle done The body in the fifty-fathom well will have to wait the old woman turned into a hare the murdered mother in the juniper tree as I whip out my Sibley guide and look for the entry with the fieldmark labeled capable of human speech. For this crime I have been accused of a failure of wonder of having chained up my inner child and sent her to work in the salt mines. But the truth (if you really want to kn

It Was A Day

It was a day a little bit like today the way the clouds threw shadows over the hill the day you realized that you weren’t going to find your future. You were never going to go to Mars or Pern or Krynn You were never going to open the door that led, inexorably, to Narnia (or even Telmar, you weren’t picky, and you were confident of your ability to lead the revolution.) Inigo Montoya was not going to slap you on the back and invite you to take up the mantle of the Dread Pirate Roberts. There would be no sardonic Vulcans or Andorians; you would never be handed an elegant weapon for a more civilized age. That was a strange day. It

One of the websites I visited this morning had a warning out about a major security flaw in all supported versions of Internet Explorer. The next site repeated the warning, and recommended switching to another browser. I still wasn't sure how reliable it was, so I went digging for more information. Here's what I found: http://mpelembe.blogware.com/blog/_archives/2008/12/16/4024094.html http://tech.yahoo.com/blogs/null/111811 http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/advisory/961051.mspx http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7784908.stm http://www.elearningservice.com/blog/2008/12/16/security-problem-for-internet-explorer/ http://flyingh

I've got a lot to say, so I'll stick with the bare bones for now and add more detail later. Tonight, I get to try for second blue belt at Tae Kwon Do. There was a competition not long ago; I won a prize for form but got beaten badly at sparring. AkumaSenshi (https://www.deviantart.com/akumasenshi) gave me some tips though, so I hope to do better this time. I turned 19 early last month. My payslip does not yet reflect that. My keyboard has been switched to a left-handed Dvorak layout, and I'm getting better at using it, but no-one I've told knows what that means. Hee hee. And finally: On Christmas Day, my family and I are going to Japan for three weeks. I've never been ther

I have a new cousin!

No, it's not a new baby or anything like that... my 30-year-old cousin Emma got married last Wednesday. It must've been the most informal non-Vegas wedding in the history of the universe. Most traditions were upheld, but in a half-joking kind of way (e.g.: the bouquet was just handed to the nearest single friend); the groom was repeatedly called Yocchan in the ceremony itself (his name is Yoshitaka) and the dance music was just that, actual dance music, not a single waltz in sight - things like Abba songs, Love Shack, Uptown Girl... the list goes on and includes several songs that I should not have known as well as I did, seeing as how they w
