This is my first project for my Digital Image Design class, in which we were asked to do a promotional poster for a game or movie of our choice. The idea was that we use multiple mediums and techniques to create an appropriate visual style.

At first I thought of the obvious (Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts etc), but I wanted to try something different to what I usually do. Ever since I played Kingdom Hearts 2, I had a minor obsession with the Space Paranoids world, despite the fact that I'd never seen the original movie (though I had played one of the light cycle games). So I figured that Tron would fit the brief well, and I'd have a good excuse to see the movie and find out just what it was I'd been geeking out about all this time.

If you haven't seen it, or played any of the games, here's the Wikipedia page with a synopsis: [link] I really enjoyed it, despite the 80's acting and plot. The visual style is so unusual, it was the first movie to use 3D graphics to any major degree. I'd say it's worth watching just for that.

I'm not going to do into detail on the techniques I used here (=P I've already blabbed on plenty, and who actually reads this bit anyway?), but I used a mixture of 2D painting and 3D modelling to create this picture. I have a few bits of my development work up in my scraps though, if you're interested.

-Photoshop CS2, Maya 6.5 & Wacom Graphire Tablet
-4 weeks, most likely 25+ hours if you include research and development work

It's probably just a poor perspective, but this looks like the kind of thing that makes the Daily Deviation....

Kingdom Hearts II was also my first exposure to Tron, and I fell in love with Bruce Boxleitner's voice and decided to watch the movie to see if he was as attractive as he sounded, and-- well. Totally epic. It quickly became my favorite classic movie. And those good-looking men in tight suits don't hurt at all ;D

BRUCE BOXLEITNER = PURE WIN

Cool picture by the way. I love kingdom hearts 2 also. I never heard of space paranoids or tron until the game.
