don't worry, I'm a beginner myself and I suck with bgs! Most of the time I just slap on a gradient, a pattern and it's done XDD I couldn't do it better than you >3>
We just have to keep practising, right? ;D

Wow, this is really cute! Great job. ^^
I love the colors you used, they are so bright and vibrant <3
But what bugs me is that the light seems to come from the top/back, but the shadows on its body look like it's coming from the left. =/
Also, The background looks a bit empty. Maybe use a texture? There are enough sparkles and stuff floating around so that's enough, just that it looks a bit flat. XD Oh, and I think it's too white. Try setting the layer mode of the white to Overlay or Soft/Hard Light, or put the Dodge tool to Highlights (if you understand what I mean XD)
But all in all it's an awesome piece >v<
