This is fan art, NOT an official sprite rip.

Revamp of a revamp, or just a different style? Either way, this was another fun one to make.

I love it! I really admire your style. The fluidity is wonderful, and it perfectly captures the SMRPG style fused with the M&L style. And it's impressive (though I guess not so much really) that you're using MSPaint. I suppose that Paint is well suited for doing "simple sprite art" lol. You may not need layers and styles and lighting such as you'd find in say, Photoshop, which makes sense, so keeping your "drawing development environment" simple makes sense. Your art is fantastic! Don't let that convoluted thing I typed above make you think I'm doing anything but singing your praises :P

I've thought for a long time it'd be cool to see SMRPG characters in a M&L or even a Yoshi's Story style. Have you done (or thought of doing) full-on sprite sheets from SMRPG?

Also, I'm sure you get asked 20 times a week, but is there a good resource you could point me toward for learning the basics of spriting?

Thank you! MS Paint does work but my method is outdated. Should probably be using Aseprite or GraphicsGale by now, those have more useful features.
I haven't thought about attempting full sheets in this style yet.… You can likely find anything you want to know about pixel art basics here.

The bigger size compared to the older version makes the frame count seem larger as well, though both animations are in perfect sync. While I usually prefer outlined sprites, the DT/PJ style looks a lot nicer than BIS. Maybe I'll give it a shot one day, too.

While the frame count is exactly the same, I actually added a frame within the squishing animation. Beyond that, DT/PJ's frame rates aren't all that different from BIS in terms of new pixels. Things are overall more detailed but the style sometimes uses rotations via the engine to animate parts.
Outlined sprites are really great, but there's something very gratifying about pixeling something simple-ish that looks like a 3D model. My best advice, if you do try it, is to use as many style references as possible.

Mind if I ask what program you use? It can't be Microsoft paint there's no way.

Yeah, I do all my pixel work in Ms Paint, then animate with GIF Movie Gear.

DUDE, you use MS Paint too?! Nice!XD If it's not too much trouble, would you mind giving some pointers to a fellow sprite artist? I've got a handful of my spritework you can check out:………………

From my experience, most pixel artists use MS Paint or GraphicsGale. It's not really all that special a thing.
If I had to give overall criticism, you rely too much on bland colors. Varying the hues of your palettes in general will make your work more attractive.
Using anti-alias would help as well, almost all of your work uses hard outlines and simple shading which looks unpolished. Just because you want a detail to stand out doesn't mean it should use the darkest color.
Lastly, you really need to avoid banding, which is following the outline too closely with another color.

That's some hard work. I really envy you.
