Spoilers for episode 60 of Dragonball Super.
So, can you really blame me for this one? I know I'm super critical of Dragonball Super but I am enjoying it overall. I'm a heavy veteran DBZ/Future Trunks fan so yes I have been critical, but I'm happy to recognize when they get something right. Granted I feel the storytelling here was rushed. It feels like we're coming to the climax so they needed to firmly establish the relationship between Trunks and Mai in a hurry. Not great storytelling in my opinion. However, I approve of how Trunks was directed. He didn't even hesitate. He wasn't embarrassed or shy, his friend was in danger and he knew he had to act fast. Good on ya blue-haired Trunks
a friensgip, not even a little. It is forced like, even Toriyama said he did it cuz of lack of romance in DB series. Really, how did she even survive in that rocky desert being a baby? I hate the writers-pieces-of-shit and Toriyama, who allowed them to do this with his masterpiece. Which is not any masterpiece now. Not any longer…
.... Sorry... couldn't help... your artworks are the best, just couldn't help... Mai is my trigger of hartred towards Super.
I always thought Trunks looked like a prince (son of one, anyway). Totally getting sleeping beautify vibes. Well drawn
I'm one of the people who doesn't find them controversial at all. They are still both PHYSICALLY the same age and at this point they are both adults. I didn't hear anyone complaining about Inuyasha and Kagome. He's hundreds of years older than her yet they are physically the same age too. If you ask me, Trunks and Mai's age-gap is far smaller. Both of these relationships were made possible by magic: the Bone Eater's Well and Dragon Magic.
Trunks and Mai both have a Time theme! Trunks is a half-alien, time-travelling warrior and Mai is an age-reversed mercenary and resistance leader. They're both pretty weird and they fit.
I feel like people get so judgemental of this couple because they are grabbing at anything to still feel righteous when so much else has been compromised these days (just spend a day on the net). The irony is that they are the most naturally written anime couple I have seen in a good long time. They feel... healthy!
It was only a matter of time before F Trunks would get a girlfriend, and somehow I don't see him hooking up with a standard normal girl.
Future Mai is a warrior in her own right, she is courageous, selfless, smart, and beautiful so what's not to like?
At least she has some history in the series unlike Chichi who showed up one day and demanded to be married with Goku without even knowing him well.
I agree, they really directed Mai's character in an interesting and compelling new way.
Ugh, Chi Chi has her own idea of history. You have to give it to her, she sticks ferociously to her vows and is a dedicated, albeit controlling, wife and mother. I just don't like how she disrespects her husband. I feel like she was more in love with the idea of getting married instead of really knowing and appreciating who Goku is as a person. Yeah he's kind of a derp but what you marry is what you get, she shouldn't try to change him to fit her own selfish vision. Life lessons from cartoons, yeah.
It's quite refreshing to see a male character make some effort to win over the girl for once.
I guess I'm old fashioned like that but I like the man to make the initiative.
I always disliked how Goku and Chichi came to be (no story telling whatsoever) and I always felt Gohan was never really IN love with Videl.
Bulma and Vegeta on the other hand had great chemistry even though it wasn't exactly love at first sight.
I also find it interesting that Mai used to be a bad-girl, how very much like his mother to fall for someone like her.
Trunks turns out to be more like his mother every day.
There was a time I had to admit I was a little disappointed he wasn't more like his father in the way of character but now I couldn't be more happy. the DBS Bulma is a powerhouse who even dares challenging a god like Beerus.
Therefore Bulma is my favourite female character, even though she isn't a fighter in the physical sense.
She is the most gutsy of them all.
I would say Goku and Chi Chi are an example of what NOT to do. They're pretty dysfunctional but they make it work somehow. I would say that's pretty true to life. I'm not going to lie, there are a LOT of women like Chi Chi today who get married for the same reasons she did. At least she's not bailing out--she's just got to work on the control issues, lol.
Vegeta and Bulma are great. Rocky start but there's a very kindred thing there. They are probably the most complex couple. Trunks did say they first came together out of loneliness. Nowadays, Bulma, despite her hot temper, is actually very patient and accepting of Vegeta. Unlike Chi Chi, Bulma gives her husband space to work out his issues and be himself and yes, she dares to step up to Beerus. She thinks in the big-picture and she does what she can to gain allies and ensure the success and safety of her family and friends. She is what I call a "hub character" or facilitator. She creates the base of operations so everyone has a place of support and safety to come to and launch from. Totally agree about Bulma (OVARIES OF STEEL). She is the best and most essential female character in the whole series. If she ever died or disappeared it would be a blow to the series.
I think Gohan and Videl have a pretty good dynamic, at least in Z. They started out as school friends and you saw some feelings grow, especially when one or the other was in danger. In true DBZ fashion, most romance happened off screen. They're a bit cookie-cutter in Super though. Videl is just too mild-mannered and perfect now.
Ditto, I mentioned this in a comment to you down below. Trunks gets Vegeta's all-or-nothing and Bulma's amorous tendencies Very nice combo.
You hit the nail on the head here.
And yes I always thought there was a world of difference in the way Chichi treats Goku and How Bulma handles Vegeta.
It's Chichi's own fault really, she was always so much in a hurry to get married and have children that she overlooked some very important essentials.
Like....does my new husband have a job? Can he provide for his future family?
Does he even like me?
If she really knew Goku, she would have known he lives for the next fighting challenge only, and that he'll never be a regular Joe with a desk-job and a 5 zeros income.
I know many people dislike Chichi and yes I can understand that because she wants to control the lives of her husband and sons too much, but she does have a point when it comes to Goku's responsibility's as a husband and (grand)father.
Like giving Chichi a bit more attention or spending more time with Goten who plays the less important second son in this series.
(such a waste).
Goku always gives of such a bored vibe when he is with his family which I think is a missed opportunity to develop and deepen his character and his family a bit more.
Bulma on the other hand (love your description of her) is way smarter in getting what she wants from her family, she uses honey instead of vinegar.
She spoils her family rotten and showers them with love, but in return she demands total obedience.
Even Vegeta has crumbled over time in her relentless pampering, so he is now completely unable to refuse her every whim because she has him so tightly wrapped around her little finger, and that alone shows how much he loves her.
Vegeta always tries so hard to hide his feelings for her that he fails completely in doing so, I love it.
Gohan and Videl have a relationship that grew over time.
They were high-school students who developed a relationship that is perhaps the most natural and healthy one in this series.
Even though I think they are overdoing the whole domestic thing a bit.
I know Gohan is a scholar now and I'm fine with that, but did he really had to become such a nerd over time?
Gohan has ironical become the exact opposite of Goku in this series.
And I agree with you on Videl, she has become way to mellow and girly and not at all like the tough cookie we knew in DBZ.
But I guess becoming a mother will do that.
And when it comes to Trunks and Mai?
Are they a Weird couple?
Yes, they are, but that's what makes them so interesting.
Both Future and Kid trunks are making some serious effort to woe her, I find that sort of dedication very attractive in a man
and quite unexpected too from someone who's considered the most shy and timid of all the Saiyans.
I know people were starting to think Trunks was gay at some point because he never showed any interest in the opposite sex before, but I guess he's quite picky when it comes to women and Future Mai impressed him with her strong character.
He knows what he wants and is going for it.
He is like you say a perfect mix of his parents that way.
With honey, that's a nice way to put it. Bulma certainly knows how to bribe people (and otherworldly beings)! We all know Vegeta be tsundere for her.
Gohan and Videl, I don't mind the domesticity. They're a young family building a home. Gohan wants to work hard to keep his family secure and tbh, we need more men like these in the world. I know young couples like them in real life. I don' think Videl had to become so girly and passive in the process. She used to butt heads with Chi Chi as a teen, that's how she managed to carve out some territory in the Son family If you ask me, becoming a mother means you have to be TOUGHER like a lioness. Maybe it's just too early to tell, maybe Videl will have a chance to show her old fire in a future arc. Judging from her participation in the Super Saiyan ritual, she is still very brave.
My favorite thing about Gohan was the fact that he's not only a nerd but a STRONG nerd. I just hope they find a way to merge his research with fighting. I get that he's a scholar but WHAT is he studying and lecturing on?? He could have been studying power levels, transformations and ki. He could also be studying ancient power and legends. He could be the one giving us answers when we are wondering WHY THE HECK SS TRUNKS HAS BLUE AND YELLOW AURA. He could be the historian of Toriyama's sometimes convoluted plot! Combine that with Piccolo's knowledge base and they have a good reservoir of info to draw battle tactics from.
I don't know if Future Trunks is savvy enough to be consciously wooing Mai. Their connection was first born of the need to fight and survive. It just happened to grow into something more. This Trunks didn't get to be a normal teen. He had to be hiding and fighting from the start so he didn't have the luxury of dating. But like I said before, he may be reserved but once he's locked on to someone, he goes all out because in their world, you don't know which day is your last.
Like I said a "missed opportunity"
It sometimes feels to me that Goku takes everything in life for granted, even his family.
He doesn't know what its like to lose everything for good and should really try to cherish the things he has before they are all gone.
Pan will at least have the attention of both her parents, Piccolo and Hercule so she doesn't have to feel neglected.
Gohan was once a co-main character and is still a favourite among fans these days (not mine though, he comes fifth place.)
He is a very good father and husband as far as I can tell, its too bad he can't seem to combine his parenting skills with his fighting skills though.
I do have the feeling that what he's researching will be of great importance in the future somehow, we'll just have to wait and see.
It better be important for him to become so lax with his fighting skills.
Future Trunks is UN-consciously wooing Mai though, he isn't really subtle about it.
Mai however is a bit more reluctant to show her affection because she knows of herself that she's old enough to be his mother, while Trunks is unaware of her actual age.
But I can tell that she likes him.....a lot.
If you think about it, Trunks was never given an opportunity to show interest in the opposite sex. The only one that was near his age (at any given point) was 18. He does describe her as attractive tho, while he just describes 17 as a boy with black hair and a scarf~
If anything you just created a space to talk DB just now by making some nice, thoughtful, quality art. You can control your corner and set the atmosphere
Yeah, I dunno. People get in a frenzy online and don't look at more angles. Even I have to watch myself! >_<
This art is fantastic!
Yamcha’s not a pervert at all, have you even watched Dragon ball.
All are significantly more perverted/lustful/attentive to the opposite sex then Yamcha. Just because you dislike a character, doesn’t mean you can make up facts about them.
And also, remember who his mother is Teen Bulma was pretty boy crazy and now as a wife and mom, she's actually quite affectionate.
So Trunks gets Vegeta's all-or-nothing mentality and Bulma's amorous tendencies mixed together.
Basically the previous poster was wrong.
When a girl flirted with Yamcha, he got nervous, and turned her down.
The following characters are all more crazy about the opposite sex then Yamcha, and have been seen pursuing them on multiple occasions.
Also is it wrong if I imagine Goku doing this to Vegeta... I mean feeding him a Senzu Bean, not just kissing him
bend it what you want but Mai stays a 41 year old woman...
I also agree with what you said, how he went straight to the point and wasn't embarassed or anything at all even if Bulma and Vegeta were there
It seems like little Trunks' pep talk worked wonderfully
